Would you accept two Unspayed dogs who will be in heat and/or bleeding during their stay? Would you charge a special needs fee? How much?

I have had a request to care for two unspayed dogs who may be bleeding during their stay with me. I am not familiar with breeding dogs and see the possibility of changing bloody diapers as pretty distasteful. I am not interested in a discussion of why this owner should spay her dogs, I just want to know if anyone else has experienced this and how messy or extra difficult it is to care for animals in this situation. Thank you.

It would be difficult. Not only are you dealing with the mess but you might also be dealing with behavioral issues. The boarding facilities in my area take in dogs that are not spayed or neutered BUT they are confined. They are not allowed to play with other dogs because they attract other dogs with their scent and it can become an aggressive environment. Other boarding facilities do not take them at all, the last resort for an owner is boarding them at a home environment. If you are willing to deal with the mess and not have dogs around them I suppose it'll work out but I definitely would charge a fee for that service and you are being very kind.

I haven't boarded any in-heat females to this point. However, I work at a spay and neuter clinic and have seen quite a few in-heat females the past three years. I don't know why anyone would want to go through that! What a mess.
I think it's perfectly reasonable to charge an extra fee for that. You'll also have to consider the extra work of making sure no opportunistic males take advantages.

I just had a problem similar to this.....I allowed an un-neutered pup to stay at my house for a weekend, because I couldn't expect him to be neutered yet (even though my profile doesn't allow dogs that are intact), and he pretty much wouldn't stop humping my dog all weekend. They got along great, but I felt so bad for her and needed to separate them for periods so my girl could get a break. I think I have to stop allowing puppies so that I don't have to have a decline rate on my stats because so many puppies aren't fixed yet. Honestly, I wouldn't take them, those dogs should be boarded, or have a sitter brought to their house. You will have messes and behavioral issues, and what if they get out??? Then you could be responsible if one of them gets pregnant while out of the house!
