Requests to book when I have marked "Unavailable"

I am new to http://Rover.com. My first two requests have been for dates that I marked as 'unavailable' on my Rover calendar. I have had to decline these requests because of this and I am worried that if it keeps happening, my profile ranking will go down based on something that I don't believe is my fault. Why are people allowed to request to book for days that I am not available? Can I do anything to change this?

I'm not sure this will affect your Rover ranking negatively. If an owner tries to contact you for dates you have blocked on your calendar they get this warning message: "These dates are appear unavailable for this sitter." They know they may get declined by you...but so does Rover so I doubt they penalize you.

You can say 'I'm sorry but if you check my availability calendar you can see those dates are booked.' If I can't take a dog for whatever reason I mention they have the option to call Rover support for help placing their dogs and give them the 888 number. Rover support is great and will make you look professional. They have lots of sitters they can call to help an owner, even at the last minute.

I always tell my regular clients to contact me anyway, even if my calendar says we are booked...I will take an extra dog if I can, to keep a faithful client happy. I think that's a good reason someone can request a blocked date.

There's an option in your profile settings that lets you determine whether or not you will show up in the search results for longer stays that include days you are marked unavailable. You may want to take a look through your settings if this is what is happening.

If it's for shorter stays, you may have just had some bad luck starting out. We all get those requests from time to time where it's clear the owners didn't really look at our profile before messaging us, whether it's not checking our availability, the services we offer, whether or not we take puppies, or anything else. I figure that it all balances out in the end, because we're all having to decline these mismatched requests. If your calendar continues to be an issue for you, you might consider putting something in the very beginning of your profile like "due to X, I can only take dogs on Y days" or "please check my calendar for availability before sending me a request." If people are going to read anything, it will be the little bit that shows up in the search rankings, so the most important info should be right up front.

Thanks! Maybe I am missing something but I feel like I have looked through every single page and cannot find the thing you are talking about. I know I've seen it, but what settings/page is it under?

It's on the calendar page, under Flexible Availability. It mentions overlapping stay dates specifically, so changing that setting may only work if you're unavailable because of another stay. I thought the wording was more generic than that when I looked at it before. Oh well!

This happens to me a lot as well, and it is rather frustrating. The only thing I can figure is that owners aren't putting their dates in to search, OR they aren't looking at the availability calendar. I also accept clients outside of Rover, and right now most of my calendar is filled with these clients (who booked more than a week or two in advance). So, I'm in the tough position of declining the majority of my Rover requests and not having very many successful bookings to off-set it. I liked Laura's idea of reminding them to check the calendar at the beginning of my profile.
