Is it acceptable to charge a higher fee if I am traveling further than usual for the dog?

This new dog will end up being about a 40 minute round trip - do you think it would be okay to ask the owner if I can charge a bit more since I'll be traveling further? Especially since I would be going out there 3x a day to check on/walk the dog. My fees are already pretty low since I'm relatively new to the community and I'm trying to attract clients so I can get some positive reviews. Thanks!

I took a peek at t your service area , it looks pretty large from the map though I don't know your area. You could also handle this for future clients by saying in your profile that mileage beyond x from your home is a certain extra charge per mile, per trip. For example, I charge 25 cents per mile per trip, beyond 10 miles from my home. It pays for the gas!

Hi Elizabeth, If it's booked, I think the window of opportunity to discuss ended. If the assignment hasn't been booked, I think it's perfectly acceptable to bring to the client's attention that this is a bit further than you planned and ask if a small cost adjustment would be in their budget. That way you can have a straight forward conversation. Rather than going back & forth 3 times/day, maybe things can be arranged so you stay there between two of the three walks and provide more quality time with the dog, which would be of value? Be prepared, this conversation could also lead to the client deciding to consider other sitters. I'd suggest you reemphasize you really look forward to caring for their dog.

Hi Elizabeth: Is the new client within your service area? If so, then I don't think you should charge more. You can seize the opportunity to expand on your business if you want to. Since you will be going to the client's home 3 times a day, you can take advantage of being in their neighborhood and advertise by either putting postcards or flyers on the doors of neighbors with barking dogs when you are out walking, or handing out your business cards to others walking their dogs while you are around. If the area/neighborhood is too far for your liking, perhaps you should narrow your service area parameters.
