I have raised and lost dogs since I was a toddler. Taking care of pets is a natural stress relief for me, it's more than just feeding and letting them out in the yard. I show them love and attention by bathing, playing, talking, and laying with them. They will not see anger but will learn boundaries only when necessary. I am active and will include pets with me whenever possible. They will have a comfortable place to stay. We can play inside or out, but I think sleeping is best in a warm, dry, comfy bed. It could be dog bed, a pad of blankets or a couch cushion, if they choose. It's important to me that they feel safe and comfortable with me. We need to trust each other.
