Description:

Your pooch will be well loved and cared for in my modest single family home. (Sorry, because of the pets already in my home, I can only accommodate 1 dog.) Please be aware that I have a Pit Bull/German Shepherd mix (adopted as a puppy from an animal shelter) and 3 adopted cats in my home. If your pooch is not dog AND cat friendly, I also offer in home care for the same price.

We live in a single family home in a nice family and pet friendly neighborhood. We have a small fenced-in back yard that your pooch and mine can play in. Hemi likes to play fetch and has been raised to share his toys. There is also a small fenced in dog park in our neighborhood, at the end of our street.

If you would like, I can take your pup to Town Lake for a run, a swim and/or playtime at the open dog park. If you have a favorite spot to take your pooch, let me know and I will be glad to take him or her there.

About Mary W.:

(Note: Before committing to any services with a new client, a meet and greet is required. This is for the safety and protection of everyone involved.)

As a proud fur mommy, I know its hard to leave the "kids" behind. Kennels work, but there is limited one-on-one interaction with your pet. Or they want to charge you an extra fee for play time. So not cool!

A little more about me...I am in my mid-30s. I have Bachelors and Masters degrees in Graphic Design and Publications Design (respectively). Additionally, I have been a member of the Air Force for almost 12 years, so you can bank on the fact that I am dedicated, hard-working and trustworthy.

Previously, I was a staff member at Austin Pets Alive!, working in the neonatal ward, bottle feeding the unweaned kittens (too little to be vaccinated or adopted). Now I am trainer and I volunteer in the nursery weekly. I also have the pleasure of fostering some of the kittens from the nursery. I love helping the 4-leggers get ready for adoption! (If you are interested in being a volunteer, ask me how!)

Occasionally, I am also an RuffTail Runner through Austin Pets Alive! and Team Spiridon. If you are unfamiliar with the program, it means I am trusted to take one of the shelter dogs out for a run around Town Lake. Good for them and good for me.

If there is anything else you would like to know, please feel free to contact to me. I would like you to feel as comfortable as possible with me while caring for your pet(s).

How long have you been a dog lover? Tell us about your history with dogs.

For as long as I can remember I have had a dog in my life. A poodle when I was young, a German Shepherd/Chow mix when I was in high school and college, and my current pup, Hemi, since he was just a little guy. And there are the countless neighborhood dogs I used to walk for a little spending money in middle school. A life without dogs is just plain silly!

What would you like to know about a dog before sitting him or her? Do you have any breed preferences?

My biggest concern is you dog's experience with cats, and other dogs. I have 3 cats in my home. They are obviously used to dogs, but not used to being chased by them. If your dog has never met a cat before, out of respect for my cats, I will not be able to watch your dog in my home. But I do also offer traveling dog sitting.

Being breed specific is akin to being racist and I do not believe in it. The only dog I do not like to work with is one that is aggressive.

I am also not species specific. Well, I prefer not to deal with spiders. Snakes, lizards, birds, small woodland creatures, etc. on the other hand, are right up my alley.

Do you have reliable transportation in the event of an emergency?

Yes, I have my own wheels, or my husband's should mine need a trip to the shop.

Are you comfortable administering medication?

Depends on the medication. Pill or dropper form I am familiar with, but if it involves needles, I am not sure I am the girl for you. It is not that I do not want to, it is just that I have never dealt with administering that type of medication.

How much time do you plan on spending with my dog each day?

As much as you prefer, depending on my schedule that day. I do have a part time retail job, so I do not always know my schedule way in advance. If you would like me to spend a lot of time with your pet(s) and you book 2 weeks in advance, I can request off so that I can dedicate that time to your pet(s).

If you have a backyard, please describe it.

We do have a small fenced-in back yard. It is a tall, brand new fence so there are no holes for small ones to squeeze through. It is mostly grass with patches of dirt. There is an equally new small porch that the pooches can lounge on, or hide under. The yard is a relatively flat surface and partially shaded by trees.

Where will my dog sleep?

We allow our dog, Hemi, to sleep in the room with us. He has a dog bed, our bed and a pile of pillows on a cedar chest to choose from. There is a baby gate up to prevent him from roaming the house unattended. Hemi also has his own room, with a loveseat under the window, that he stays in when we are not home. Your pooch is welcome in our room or Hemi's room. If you prefer a different arrangement, please let me know.

Where will you take my dog on walks? Tell me about it.

There is a small park a few streets away from our house. There is also a 2-3 mile loop we like to take Hemi to for his walks. It is a sidewalk that runs on both sides of W Dittmar Road between Manchaca Road and S 1st Street. I can also take the pups to Town Lake for a run, a swim and/or playtime at the open dog park. If you have a favorite spot to take your pooch, let me know.

Mary W.'s Experience:

I have lived with pets of all kinds since I was in diapers. Small dogs, large puppies/dogs, kittens/cats, hamsters, a large rabbit, a lizard and parrots have all been in my care at one time or another. Some were my own pets and some were pets I looked after while their pet parents were away.

Are you willing to do additional tasks at my home while I'm away
(e.g., water plants, bring in the mail)?

If you would like me to pick up the mail or water the plants, no worries, I have you covered. If you would like me to take care of additional duties, like feeding the cats or cleaning the litter box, just let me know. I can do that too!

How much time do you plan on spending with my dog each day?

As I have done with my pets on occasion, I can stop by a few times a day to play with your pooch and take him or her for a much deserved walk. Since I want you to feel comfortable with the care your "kids" get, I can tailor my services to your needs.

Do you need me to stay the night? Stop by 4 or 5 times a day? If you would like, I can take your pup to Town Lake for a run, a swim and/or playtime at the open dog park. If you have a favorite spot to take your pooch, let me know.

Hemi (Hemison Montana)

Age: 10 years old
Weight: 75 lbs.
Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier & German Shepherd Dog

Hemi was adopted from a shelter at 2 months old. He had been abandoned and suffered from severe separation anxiety. He has come a long way, but still gets a little upset (barking) when someone leaves him. Recently we have discovered that he likes to join us on our runs. (He used to jump and bite his leash.) He is a big love bug and wants to make friends with everyone, 2 or 4 legs alike. He grew up with cats in the house and currently has 3 feline sisters that occasionally snuggle with him. One big happy family!

Zoey (kitty)

Age: not provided
Weight: 11 lbs.
Breed:

Zoey is our most recent addition. (We adopted her from a local shelter who I was volunteering for at the time.) She's an interesting little girl who is a mix of Siamese (flame point) and tabby. On occasion she will look at you with the signature Siamese cross-eyes. Because of this I call her my little spider monkey.

Cali (kitty)

Age: not provided
Weight: 10 lbs.
Breed:

Cali is was also adopted from a local shelter. She was 4 years old at the time, and older kitties tend to be overlooked. Since I have always wanted a calico kitty, it was love at first sight. And for those of you that don't know calico is a color, not a breed, and is almost always found on females. She's a finicky little girl, but can be a lover when she wants to be.

Lucy (kitty)

Age: not provided
Weight: 16 lbs.
Breed:

Lucy is our fat cat. She was rescued from the "mean" streets of Dover, Delaware as a little, flea-ridden kitten. We think the loss of her best friend many years ago caused her to become depressed and eat her feelings. We love her regardless. While she has been with us the longest, her and Cali are about the same age.

Mary did a fantastic job watching our pets this past weekend while we were on vacation. Not only did she play with and care for our three dogs but also helped out with our chickens! It really helped us to relax when Mary would send photos of the dogs and chickens playing- it was obvious that they were comfortable and having a good time! I would definitely use her again.

We absolutely love Mary! She takes amazing care of our pup, we would recommend her to anyone.

This is the third time Mary has watched our pooches--she was as great as ever, regardless of the fact we moved further away from her. Our dogs hardly seem to miss us when Mary watches them. I can not recommend her strongly enough!

I know my dogs loved Mary! She sent me a couple of pictures of them playing, and they sure looked happy! I can't even tell she stayed here! I definitely will be using her again!

I have known Mary for 8 years. She is great with all animals, and she has had several types of animals, not just dogs and cats. She is extremely passionate for all animals. Mary has watched my dogs on several occasions, and my dogs get along with her just great. I would recommend Mary to any of my friends and family to watch their animals too.

Mary has been an enthusiastic animal lover for as long as I've known her. She is a tireless advocate for them, volunteering and even adopting furry little friends to be part of her family. I cannot think of of a more qualified or more loving caretaker. I would trust her with my own pets in a New York minute.

Mary has watched my dog multiple times while I have been out of town. She is great with dogs and even volunteers walking dogs at a local shelter. My dog is large, so she can handle any size dog. Mary is absolutely wonderful with dogs and I would recommend her for dog sitting to anyone. She is great!

Mary has been looking after my Cairn Terrier, Dexter for the better part of 4 years now. She takes wonderful care of him and he is always excited to see her. Dexter sometimes requires medication and special food, and Mary always makes sure he gets whatever is needed. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Mary to anyone who needs a reliable and caring sitter.
