Special needs? That's OK with me!

Pet care experience

Looking for specialized care for your elder or special needs dog? Have a sensitive or headstrong pup who doesn't listen to anyone? Long-time dog owner, lover and animal welfare supporter whose first experiences were with Dobermans as a child. I first used dog walking/daycare services in 2000 with my dog who has since passed away. My standards are off any chart! (My dog and I were featured in the original dog bus that picked up guests in the South End and I count many local dog walkers as friends!) My canine companion passed away six years ago at the age of 15 years. While I'm not looking to replace him in my heart and home, I'm looking for opportunities to enjoy some doggie companionship on a part-time basis and give some "peace of mind" to those dog parents at their wits' end. I personally know the challenges dealing with an aging companion with special needs. It is a challenge that requires patience and compassion. I consider it my pay-it-forward karma to help those who are caring for their "Golden Girls or Guys." I'm right for you if you have a companion who: * is a senior citizen; or, * has mobility or medical issues; or, * is a headstrong/doesn't play well with others; or, * is shy/needs the security of routine and home. ABOUT ME: My dog personality test comes out as a Bernese Mountain Dog. I think it's pretty accurate! SPECIAL NEEDS: I am very familiar with Angel Memorial and South Bay Vet Group. I also have experience taking dogs to aquatherapy, massage and acupuncture services and following up on any necessary care. I do not shy away from incontinent, early dementia/aging issues or special needs dogs as they are aging. I have used Eddie's Wheels and dog carts, too, caring for my elder dog. TRANSPORTATION: I have a Jeep that is accustomed to carting wet dogs from swimming or play areas. MEALTIME: While my dog was a walking vacuum cleaner and ate everything under the sun with a Lab's cast-iron stomach, not all dogs are so lucky. I am familiar with most special diets--including raw, poultry and grain-free--and have eagle eyes when walking for those nasties they always pick up on the streets. TYPES OF DOGS/SCHEDULES: I often work from home and can exercise (both of us) during the day. I am used to active, smart dogs (border collies), sensitive dogs (chows) and the blondes (goldens). I am comfortable handling dominant breeds with love (and will bribe them with treats). DOG TRAINING STYLE: Faithful disciple of Carole Benjamin's "Mother Knows Best" dog books and stickler for city-manners for all dogs. While my dog was mature enough for recall off-leash, not all dogs are. Leashes are used for all trips and walks; harnesses and seatbelts for larger dogs not completely comfortable in cars. Trained my dog to carry groceries (he ate them, too!). Was also a supporter of Friends of Peters Park Dog Park in their negotiations with the city and Wilkes-Passage condos. I have also transported rescue dogs in the Northeast. OTHER FAMILY MEMBERS: Cat needs? Equal opportunity cuddler here! Sassy birds? Found out they like me, too! Not too sure about arachnids or reptiles, tho... Sometimes, it's better when folks sleep in their own beds at night. That's OK with me! I can take my pillow and accommodate your dog's needs. I can stay in your own home with your: * Senior or elderly dog; * Dogs who have difficulty navigating unfamiliar terrain or stairs; * More than one dog/companion animal in the home (fish, cats, etc.); * Sensitive Capricorn dogs who don't like change. We all have our own issues and if change is one of your pup's issues, I can easily accommodate their needs and routine. How long have I loved dogs? Furever? (Sorry, bad joke!) I read the AKC breed standard book for fun, had a book called "The Book of the Chow Chow", and use dog stickers when I run out of guest name tags. I gave my childhood dog birthday parties and only invited her neighborhood dog friends--I didn't know I was supposed to invite the humans, too. I visit dog parks to meet new friends. If there is a squabble amongst the dogs over a ball or toy, I am the one who breaks it up and gives them all a time out. I am a supporter of the Grey Muzzle, Best Friends and MSPCA. I've worked briefly with rescue transport groups--unfortunately, many don't go through Boston. I've worked with rescued dogs and know the gentle care that must be taken around them to build up their confidence. Being a city dweller, I prefer walks instead of sticking a dog in the back yard with nothing to do. More fun for both of us to go on a walk or car ride for ice cream.! My experience administering medication Yes! Administered pills and liquids to dogs and cats. Have also followed detailed care instructions for senior and handicapped dogs.

Thank you Marie for taking such excellent care of Gunnar and Happy. Thanks to you I was able to have a carefree getaway despite it being only 9 days out from Gunnar's major surgery. Not missing my daughter's event meant the world to me - thanks so much.

My dog had an absolutely amazing stay with her! I received daily updates with pictures and a summary of what they were up to that day, and felt like I was with them the whole time. This was the first time I was out of town without worrying about leaving my dog behind!!

I love and appreciate all dogs for who they are. I have a lot in common with sassy, bratty dogs, while enjoy being patient with shy or insecure dogs. From seniors to sassy pups and everyone in between. I respect them for who they are. Pokey Beagle walk? We've got all day. Weak bladder or age issues? Seniors deserve our respect and I have all the patience in the world for them! I would like to meet the dog(s) beforehand and let them meet me. During the meeting, we'll spend about an hour discussing their social and medical issues and any challenges they may have. We'll go over usual topics like dietary restrictions, car rides, favorite toys, quirks and preferences. All dogs must have good city-manners and can be diverted from 'negative' behavior. If we're allowed to go swimming or to the beach (off-season, of course), will return pup in the clean and gnarl-free condition! Car rides are a blast along with ice cream trips. The dogs must be able to be distracted from showing stress or anxiety when away from the owner. Yes, there is always that initial moment of panic when Mom or Dad leave -- but, if the panic is severe, then caring for them in their own home is a better choice.

A typical day

Our walks depends on their likes and schedules. If they have friends at the local dog parks, we can go there. If they like walking, we can head down to Castle Island. If the like driving on big adventures, then the Fells, Stoddards Neck or Dunkin Donuts drive-thru! You have no idea how well-behaved dogs will be when presented with a Munchkin! (*Only if allowed gluten-full products, of course!) Your dog's sleeping arrangement: Hopefully with me if allowed. Time I'll spend with your dog: They'll probably get tired playing with me first-unless they're a Vizsla. Then, I know they'll tire me out first! Time I'll spend with your dog: For sleep-overs, from 7pm until noon. May have off-site chores I'll need to do for a few hours. Flexible with schedules, of course!
