Fond of +reinforcement!

Pet care experience

I have 1.5 years of professional experience dog walking and pet sitting in Somerville, MA for Petwell Supply, 10 years of experience dog/cat sitting in Western NY, and 20 years experience of dog and cat ownership. My time as a dog walker and pet sitter at Petwell sadly ended because of COVID-19. I relocated to Austin, TX to be closer to family and apply to grad schools in the area. Unfortunately this move forced me to leave my golden retriever with my parents in NY until I can get settled. I am hoping to walk and care for other people's pets to help others and give some of my boundless love for my golden to other pets who could benefit from it while their family is away at work. As a full time dog walker and pet sitter during my time in MA I encountered a variety of dog breeds, puppies, temperaments, rescue dogs, shy dogs, flight risks, dog aggressive dogs, and highly reactive dogs. As a result I am comfortable in a variety of situations while caring for and walking dogs. I walked a few dozen dogs and had about as many repeat clients, for e.g. Tillie the Havanese in my photos, that I walked several times a week for over a year. I love sitting for cats and other small animals and I have 10 years of experience sitting them. I owned and boarded cats in college and am looking forward to being settled enough to adopt and foster cats. I have read Karen Pryor's "Don't Shoot the Dog" book on behavior couple of times and firmly believe that the only negative reinforcement or positive punishment that any animal should get is removal of stimulation such as eye sight or praise, a sharp "no" or "bap bap!", and the occasional delayed treat. I am a huge fan of positive reinforcement in training and redirection when a dog or puppy is misbehaving. If your dog or puppy misbehaves or makes a mistake in the house then you will get a heads up in the walk summary and they will not face any repercussions other than redirection, removal of eyesight for a few moments, a sharp no, or a delayed treat if they were being asked for a good behavior. I fully understand that if your dog or puppy makes an accident inside then there is no reason to get upset with them. I'll do my best to clean up and hopefully we will make it outside the next time!

Laura was great! Communicated frequently and sent me plenty of cute pics of my cat. She stayed with my cat even longer than I expected, I knew my girl was in good hands.

Laura did an excellent job taking care of my two cats! She was extremely communicative and followed care instructions to a T. She immediately got a sense of both of my cat's personalities, which I got a kick out of. I felt so relieved to know that my kitties were in such good hands when I was out of town!

Laura is one of the most naturally gifted dog caretakers I have ever met. She has always been an animal lover, specifically with dogs. She has a lifetime of experience with a variety of dogs, as she has almost always had pet dogs in her home. She takes excellent care of her dogs, including them on just about every walk she’s ever taken. I am a frequent dog sitter and I have brought Laura with me on several occasions to assist with dog care. She always seems to have a connection with each dog she meets and always had helpful advice for what the dog needs. She is incredibly mature and responsible, especially with animals. I would highly recommend Laura for any of your animal caretaking needs!

Laura's love and respect of animals is easily noticed in her care of my dog, Izzy. Izzy is very anxious when having her nails trimmed. Laura was patience, kind, and gentle toward Izzy. Laura is the first and only person able to trim Izzy's nails without a wrestling match!

Information Laura B. would like to know about your pet

What are your pet's energy levels? What your pet is reactive to? What motivates your pet? Has your pet ever aggressive towards humans, dogs, cats, or anything else? I have a lot of experience walking golden and labrador retrievers, spaniels, havanese, hounds, shepherds, and great danes.

A typical day

I like to meet a pet's needs and mold my visits into their normal schedule to ensure that your dog is having a good time and their needs for their exercise are met. If you tell me that they need to do certain things to get their energy out then I am up for it. I am happy to take dogs on choppy halting walks for perpetual sniffers/markers, smooth and steady hiking walks for the determined fast walkers, throw balls at the dog park for active dogs, meet up with your dog's regular group at the dog park, and I love taking out elderly dogs for short relief walks and nice and easy sniffs around the yard and neighborhood.
