Bubbly, Veterinary Office Employee

Pet care experience

I have been dogsitting since I took my first veterinary office job in 2009 after graduation from college with a degree in Biology. I grew up on a farm with multiple animals, and have been caring for rabbits, cats, dogs, and even reptiles and amphibians from a very young age. I worked in a grooming salon throughout college, and helped the trainer who worked in the same building any chance I could. My current job, which is in veterinary specialists office, allows me to be off from Friday to Sunday, while also allowing me direct interaction a wide variety of breeds of dogs and cats. My career also provides me with a great deal of experience with a multitude of medications from eye drops to oral pills to injections, I am definitely capable of handling it! I currently own a Rottweiler who is a licensed therapy dog in a nursing home with her Canine Good Citizen certification and a Staffordshire Terrier mix who is in training to become a children's therapy dog.

Julie was excellent with our dog! She stayed in our home and we wouldn't have had better care from anyone else. Usually, when we come home from others our big guy would be very clingy. With Julie, our dog seemed satisfied and very happy. She communicated and gave us updates on our dog. Our home was cleaned like we had left it. We will definitely use her again.

After our dog became blind, it was difficult to board him at the kennel we always used. It was more stressful for him and he required a more structured environment. Julie worked at the eye vet and offered to care for him at home. That was over two and a half years ago. Julie has been excellent caregiver for our "pup". She loves him as if he was her own dog. She is very attentive to his medication schedule and has gotten to know him well as far as the queues he gives for different problems. A couple of times, he has had GI issues and she took the initiative to purchase ground beef and rice and cooked it for him to help settle his symptoms. She sends us texts to let us know if anything is wrong and is very diligent in knowing when we arrive to make sure he is not left too long without going out to potty or miss any medication doses. At times when we have forgotten to confirm that we arrived, she has texted to double check to make sure our pup's needs are met. She is very respectful of our home as well. We recommend her highly and without reservation.

Information Julie O. would like to know about your pet

I think honesty is the best policy, so if your dog is dog aggressive or leash reactive, I do not have an issue handling them (I do so in my job everyday), but I would like to know before hand so I can properly plot our walking routes or activities. I am fairly small, so knowing how your dog behaves on a leash is important too. I am happy to work on pulling or similar behaviors, though. I do not expect any dog to be a perfect leash walker all the time! I prefer not to use flexi-leads due to the lack of control it gives me, particularly with large dogs, but I can also provide my own leash. I am familiar with gentle leaders and easy walk harnesses. I own two large "dangerous" breed dogs, so I am definitely capable of fielding the questions that come with "dangerous" dogs when you have them out for walks, and I have a definite passion for those breeds.

A typical day

I absolutely love dog training and owning two large breed dogs I understand the importance of well done, positive reinforcement based training. I am happy to walk any and everywhere from around the neighborhood to a local park. I own an SUV that is already doggie-ready so its not a issue to travel to a dog park or walking trail. I use treats on walks to reward behaviors like waiting at a crosswalk or walking on a loose leash. I think the mental stimulation that training provides is an under-utilized tool for burning off energy, but I am totally game for a long game of fetch in a yard!
