Terriers—they’re small, cute, rambunctious…but which dog breed is the best as a pet?

Terriers are known as affectionate dogs with big personalities and intelligence to spare. But every terrier breed brings unique qualities to the table. Today, we’re breaking it down, terrier versus terrier-style. When it comes to Boston terriers and border terriers—which breed is best?

Border terriers and Boston terriers: the showdown.

1. Craziest eyes

Winner: Boston terriers

This one’s obvs. Boston terriers’ big, expressive eyes say “I love you” and “I’m a loose cannon” with equal finesse. Border terriers sweet little squinters can’t compare.

2. Most famous

Winner: Border terriers

From The Jerk to Anchorman, border terriers are stepping it up Hollywood-style. Boston terriers have a lot of room to grow here—a small role in Hotel For Dogs brings them closer to fame, but for the time being, border collies are the clear celebs.

3. Best guard dog

Winner: Neither

These friendly dogs may yip and bark at a loud knock at the door—making them stellar watchdogs—but they lack the ferocity of a guard dog. They’re much likelier to lick an intruder’s hand than they are to attack.

4. Kid-friendliest

Winner: It’s a tie

Both border and Boston terriers are known to love children—though they both have high energy levels and can be a little too rambunctious for small children. With either breed, be sure to teach any children how to properly approach and interact with a dog.

5. Smelliest

Winner: Boston terriers

Hold your head high, Boston terriers. As it turns out, flat-faced dogs inhale more air when they eat, and as a result…well, let’s just say they’re a little gassier than most.

6. Best hunter

Winner: Border terriers

Originally bred as fox hunting dogs, these smart terriers are powerful diggers with a hunger for the chase. Keep an eye on them around small animals—the instinct to hunt is a powerful one.

7. Who wore it better?

Winner: Boston terrier

Known as “the American Gentleman,” Boston terriers are always in formal attire and ready to be the life of the party.

Okay, so there’s not a clear winner here—instead, it’s all about finding the right dog for you. Maybe a Boston terrier personality is the perfect fit, or a border terrier’s temperament will bring you joy. Whatever you decide, both breeds are bound to bring a lot of love.

And remember, if you need someone to keep an eye on your furry friend—whatever their breed!—there are plenty of amazing Rover sitters offering daycare as well as drop-in visits or walks.
