Tell me if this sounds familiar: you bring home a new toy from the store, give it to your beloved, strong-jawed dog, and about five minutes later, it’s a pile of chewed-up pieces on the floor. Or, how about this one: the toys have all been destroyed, so you cross your fingers and leave for work, and come home to a destroyed shoe. Those of us with serious chewers know the value of a seriously durable dog toy.
For the sake of your wallet, a quality dog toy should take a chomping and keep on rocking, and for the sake of your dog’s safety, it should stay in one piece. Raise your hand if you’ve ever found pieces of a missing toy in your dog’s poop. Eww. These eight toys pass the test— in fact, many of them were recommended by Rover fans in our Q&A Community. The black Kong toy was most-recommended in our Rover Community Q&A, and for good reason. These ultra-strong, stuff-able, bounce-able, affordable toys are a favourite among trainers, veterinarians, pet care professionals, and dog guardians alike. The Kong Extreme collection includes a rubber tire, bone, ball, and a range of sizes of the classic Kong shape to entice your strong chewer.
Nylabone BIG Chew
When my dog Radar was at his adolescent chewing-est, Nylabones were a lifesaver. These intensely durable, intensely delicious bones are made from compressed nylon and can stand up to even the most intense chewing. They’re relatively inexpensive and last forever, making them a great value for your chew-happy pooch. As with any bone, always supervise your dog’s chewing, and remove the toy if your dog is getting a little too carried away.
CycleDog Flat Tire Flyer
If your chewer is a disk dog in training, this is a great pick. CycleDog products are made from recycled bicycle innertubes (plus a little natural rubber), and the finished product is an earth-friendly, dog-friendly, floating, flying treat.
ChuckIt! Ultra Ball
Plain old tennis balls are fine for dogs who don’t aren’t bent on destruction, but power-mouthed pooches need a ball with a tougher skin. The ChuckIt! Ultra Ball is made of bouncy rubber that can weather a whole lot of tossing, fetching, and yes, chewing. It’s a fun, affordable choice for a dog who loves playing fetch almost as much as they love using their teeth. Also available with squeaker.
Hurley Dog Bone
This brightly-colored, silly-shaped toy is my dog Radar’s absolute favorite. He can toss it, bounce it, paw it, gnaw it, bury it under a blanket, and aside from a few toothmarks, it doesn’t show its age. West Paw offers a whole range of durable rubber toys, all of which are made in the USA, recyclable, and guaranteed to last.
Tuffy Mega Ring
Tuffy toys are an excellent choice for dogs who love soft, squishy toys but can’t resist tearing out the innards of less durable products. Marketed as “the world’s toughest soft toy,” these bad boys are lined and stitched with industrial-grade luggage material that’s gentle on gums but almost immune to teeth. Tuffy makes toys in all shapes and sizes, but the Mega Ring is a great starter. It’s washable, it floats, and best of all, it lasts.
BIONIC Bone
This futuristic bone toy is ergonomically shaped to fit a dog’s mouth, making it comfortable and satisfying to chew. Bionic claims their bone is made for the most aggressive chewers, and according to one Rover commenter, it’s “great for a pit bull that loves to chew!” But it’s not just a chew toy: the hollow center can be filled with treats for training and entertainment, and best of all, it floats. Comes in three sizes.
Huckama Ball
The Huckama is a slightly irregularly shaped ball made of natural rubber that bounces unpredictably when thrown. This toy floats, has holes to stuff with treats, and is guaranteed to last even in the jaws of the most vigorous chewer.
Even if your dog isn’t a tough chewer, a durable toy that can withstand years of play is a great investment.
