answered a question Dogs, why is it that they always sniff every single plant they see?

I usually point the dog smelling situation out to people who tell me that it's sad that dogs are color blind. They are actually color different (i.e. see a different spectrum). Plus, they see us poor humans and note that we are odor blind.

answered a question Have you ever used a Thundershirt?

I agree with the people above who note that it doesn't work on all pets. However, if you buy your Thundershirt from a reputable veterinarian or feed store, (i.e. not Ebay), then the shirt comes with a guarantee. If it doesn't work fo you, you can return it for a full refund.

answered a question Is sugar-free gum more toxic to dogs than chocolate?

I'm a licensed vet, and the answer is a resounding YES. The xylitol in just a few pieces of sugar free gum can cause liver failure in a 40 pound plus dog. I have lost two dogs to xylitol and treated many others. Most of the time, it only causes low blood sugar, but when the liver is targeted, then most dogs will need to be transferred to a 24 hour specialty hospital, and the odds are not good.

answered a question Do dog calming pills actually work?

I'm a licensed veterinarian, and I would actually say it depends. If you are talking about neutriceuticals (like OTC), then they sometimes work. I feel that dogs mostly respond to their owners. If the owner believes it will work, then it works. Vice versa is also true. If you're talking about sedatives and anxiolytics, then that's a different story. I would talk to the pets' personal vet to determine if a sedative is a good choice.
