answered a question Can I give my dog benadryl to calm him down?

I think the recommended dosage is 1mg per lb of body weight, but that is more for anxiety than hyperactivity. The best thing for hyperactivity is to tire your dog out by going on a walk or playing fetch. You can also buy dog puzzle toys that make them work to get treats if you need to keep them busy. or get a kong and fill it with peanut butter.

answered a question What should I bathe my dog with?

You can bathe your dog with almost anything. dawn dish soap is good for fleas and ticks, but I recommend an oatmeal based soap to help with dry itchy skin. if your dog is really smelly you can use tomato paste to cut the smell then wash with normal soap. You can also just use human shampoo, but the shampoo I use makes my dogs get greasy faster.

Also, try to keep your shoes out of reach till they understand that they aren't toys. especially when you aren't going to be there to discourage the behavior. you can also spray your shows with some bitter anti-chew spray or clean them so they dont smell like your dog or their toys.

To add on to that. If you catch your dog chewing on your shoes take them away and immediately hand them a chew toy. Then get excited and praise them for taking the toy. Promote a toy obsession by giving them treats and praise when they chew on their toys.

answered a question How often should one bathe a dog with fleas?

dawn dish soap works much better than flea soap. I'd wash them every day with dawn dish soap. put all the bedding and cloth toys in the washer with dawn dish soap or Borax. sprinkle borax all over your carpet and furniture. let it set for a few minutes or hours then vacuum it all up. clean your baseboards with a strong cleaner like bleach (fleas hide there.) mow the lawn and pick the weeds. you can use and insecticide on the yard or sprinkle cedar wood chips. I've also heard that flood your yard with water it will kill the fleas, but you have to actually flood it and not just get the grass wet because fleas like wet environments but flooding your yard will drown the eggs. make sure you double hit all your dog's favorite areas like a dog house or spot under the porch. Thorough consistency is the only thing that gets rid of fleas. If you just wash the dogs and not the house or just the dog beds and not the carpet the fleas will just multiply again.
