answered a question Why does my dog have gas?

Your dog naturally has gas. If it's more than what you'd deem normal, it may be a food allergy to something they are consuming. Try some different kinds of all natural treats like dehydrated lamb or beef and see if you notice a difference with a certain kind of treat or a specific protein. Your dog might also have a medical issue and you can ask your vet. Perhaps probiotics to promote a healthy digestive tract would be worth a try as well.

answered a question Why is my dog crying?

If your dog is crying out of pain or discomfort, see a vet immediately.

If your dog is crying for attention, it is likely habit based. In other words dogs learn behaviors based on reinforcement. If your dog cries or whines and then you give him/attention, he/she will likely learn over time to whine and cry for attention.

You need to stop reinforcing the crying in order to lessen the behavior. You can stop giving any kind of attention at all (no talking, no touching and no eye contact) when your dog cries without legitimate reason. You can also couple that with the reinforcement of other behaviors like following basic commands, learning a command for "wait" and/or "quiet" so your dog learns to be more patient and to be quieter vs crying for attention.

answered a question Why is my dog depressed?

What do you mean by depressed?

If your dog is lethargic, there could be a medical issue going on and you should talk to your vet.

If your dog just seems down and out all of a sudden, you might also consider taking them to the vet as a drastic change in mood may have a physical cause.

You can try walks, different smells and other things like playing training games with really enticing treats or squeaky toys to get them to perk up a little bit.

If no major changes have occurred (no death of a family member or other pet) and your dog is not responding to outings, food or toys, you should contact your vet.

answered a question Why doesn't my dog like me?

People and dogs communicate differently. If you are trying to communicate with your dog just like you would a person, you might be preventing yourself from connecting to your dog in ways they can understand.

I don't know how your interactions with your dog are, but try completely ignoring them. Don't make eye contact, talk to or attempt to touch them. The leader of the pack demands space and time - so if you come home and are actively trying to get your dog's attention, you may be making them feel uncomfortable. Try ignoring them until they come to you - then reinforce good behaviors like laying at your side or at your feet (not on your feet). Take it easy and give it time.

Dogs are going to have their favorites and maybe if you have a multi-person household, you just aren't their first choice in regards to connecting personality wise. That's ok. But try acting a little more like a pack leader and see if that helps your dog around.

answered a question What should I do if my dog has dandruff?

In addition to the great info Walt gave, you can also try using a sensitive skin shampoo. Oatmeal based shampoos can be great for dry, flaky skin. You can also try using a conditioner after thoroughly rinsing the shampoo off to help moisturize.

answered a question How often should I bathe my yorkie?

Dogs with normal skin typically should be bathed once a month with a decent quality shampoo. They have some great dog shampoos on the market for all coat lengths and many different skin types. If your dog's skin has issues, you may want to try a sensitive skin shampoo and talk to your vet as you may need to bathe dogs that have allergies or certain types of skin issues more often. A good brushing between baths along with fish oil supplements and/or pumpkin can help your dog's coat stay shiny and healthy :)

answered a question Why does my dog howl in his sleep?

Dogs dream! Isn't that cool?! Dogs have dreams like we do and you'll often hear them barking, howling or see them moving their feet as if they are running. It can be very cute albeit sometimes annoying if they bark or howl loudly.

answered a question How can I get my dog to drink more water?

If your dog is not a big drinker but needs more water in his or her diet, the easiest way is to add some liquid to their food. Dogs do not naturally eat dry food so adding some water right to their kibble or whatever food you use can be a great easy way to get more liquid into their diet. If they are urinating normally, you may not need to worry about it. Great idea to talk to your vet though as if there is any aversion to water or your dog is becoming dehydrated, your vet can help.

answered a question Why does my dog eat crap?

Sometimes this can be related to something your dog is missing in their diet. If your dog is a puppy, this gross behavior is common and they may grow out of it, but consuming feces is dangerous to your dog's health so you need to keep the yard clean and discourage it. It is always a good idea to talk to your vet so I would recommend that right away. There are medications for serious cases but it may be as simple as switching your dog to a different food or a higher quality food.

answered a question Why does my dog sit on my face?

Dogs sit, lay, lean and put their feet/face on things that belong to them. This is a dominance move and should be immediately discouraged. If your dog sits on you, move away or gently move them off and you can let them lay next to or near you but not on you. If you want your dog to lay on you, it should always be invitation only for lap sitting, etc... but don't allow your dog to lay on your feet or face as this is their way of saying you belong to them.
