Adding just a little to Carmen's thorough answer, there also may be differences that you may not realize unless you closely read profiles or notice during a meet & greet. Other variables that can affect price may include: - if the sitter cares for just one or less than a handful of dogs to give more personalized care, versus lots of dogs in more of a group format. - how much care the sitter is able to provide for each dog (do they work another job, go to school, or have other things competing for their time and attention, versus lavish dogs with lots of exercise & play as the complete focus) - and even based on the needs of dogs (size, age, special needs)

Because every sitter here is independent. The Rover site advertises our services in exchange for a percentage of our bookings that covers a certain level of insurance, payment processing and 24/7 support for both sitters and owners.

Great reasons why prices vary were provided by Deb, Carmen and Jean. Sitters are no different really from, let's say, the stylists at a salon. Each one may have a different rate for services based on many factors. Or doctors for that matter; they all have their own rates.

Hi, Jacquelyn,

Prices vary by area, experience of sitter, and personal choice.

For example, I live in the western suburbs of Chicago and $30/night is pretty standard. Sitters in the city routinely charge upwards of $40/night.

New sitters generally aim for the low end of the scale while they build their business and earn positive reviews. Experienced sitters can expect a little more, and if a sitter is a vet-tech or dog trainer in real life they can charge even more. Also, earning Rover's badges for various continuing education opportunities gives added value.

Finally, it is up to each sitter to set his/her price. We can all charge whatever the market will support, as long as we are willing to put our money where our leashes are (so to speak). It is our responsibility to make sure our clients feel they get an excellent value for their money by sending pictures, providing accurate and timely communication, treating their beloved pets like our own family members, and following up after a stay with a 'thank you' and 'come again'.

I hope that helps!

It seems this question was asked twice. I'm sure there are many reasons. Some people charge more because they are in higher demand, have more reviews, provide better quality services or more services (free baths, daily runs as opposed to just brief potty breaks, etc). Some have a more convenient location so customers don't have to travel as far. Others may charge more because they don't adjust their rates based on the average local price. Some may charge higher because they've done various calculations and want to make a certain amount per hour/day or need a certain amount to supplement their income. Some sitters charge lower because they're new and want to establish a customer base and get some regulars or get some good reviews to encourage more requests. I'm sure there are many reasons I'm not thinking of too!
