My dog ate popcorn, what should I do?

My dog just ate a whole bowl of popcorn. I've heard the kernels can be dangerous--what should I do?

Don't worry. All of my dogs over the years love popcorn and in fact, we play a "hide and seek" popcorn game and that is a highlight in their lives. None of my Cocker Spaniels (both old and young) have ever gotten sick or experienced any negative experience, EVER. In fact, they sell popcorn for dogs at PetsMart, so I don't even know why you are worried unless it wasn't popped. And if it wasn't, it should pass through their system easily. Healthy dogs are much more resilient than humans (in my opinion). Give Rover the popped snack and enjoy his happiness.

Both my dogs love popcorn. It's not great for them (just like it's not great for us) but it's also not inherently dangerous for dogs. A whole bowl may cause some digestive upset, especially if it had butter/oil or salt, but I wouldn't expect anything worse than perhaps some softer stool for the next day or two. The kernels should pass through just fine.

Tessa, Because popcorn kernels are so small, they should pass easily through your dog's digestive system. I would monitor their stool for the next 2-3 days to ensure that you observe them being passed. If the popcorn that they ate was microwave popcorn, I'd also ensure that they have access to plenty of water, assuming that the popcorn was full of sodium.

Did it have butter and salt on it? Check out this yahoo site: https://answers.yahoo.com/question/in...

I don't salt or butter our popcorn so I give some to my dog only.

I would agree with Hillary. Chances are your pup will be just fine. I would recommend to keep an eye on him making sure that he is not straining to have a BM. You also want to make sure that he is eating and drinking is normal, activity normal, not coughing, not vomiting, no Diarrhea ( you may notice his stool to be a little runny just from the popcorn not agreeing with his tummy but that should only be a little runny and not last you more than a day) if anything seems abnormal than take him into your local vet but chances are he should be fine. Best of Luck!

I heard of a dog owner who's dog got the outer shell of a kernel lodged into his gum, which became an abscess and the dog actually had to be put down. Totally an extreme case but you can never be too careful.
