What's the best rope toy for puppies?

Our 9-month-old puppy is really into rope toys right now, but she shreds them in a day or two and then we have rope shreds everywhere! Can anyone recommend a rope toy for chewing (not for tug, which is all I can find online so far). Or does anyone have ideas as to the type of material I should be looking for? Most of the ropes I see are made of cotton, so I'm not sure if there is a more durable material I should look for. Thanks!

I wouldn't recommend rope toys. The strings get torn, shredded, ingested. Have been known to intertwine in the intestines and cause severe problems. I suggest a konk with and age appropriate biscuit or a tug made from konk material. My dog loves them, too, but the strings get caught in his throat.

Agree! No rope toys for any dog.

Rope toys are fine as long as they're used under supervision, but no toy is indestructible. Like any toy, anything that becomes broken or frayed becomes a choking hazard and should be replaced. Until then, though, rope is great as an active toy (and for flossing teeth), but ensuring the right size and thickness for your dog is key when choosing a rope toy. If your dog is a voracious chewer, you're going to need a really thick, soft rope or the thing won't last very long. A smaller mouth, or a dog who's more of a nibbler, will obviously be fine with something less hardy. Stick to cotton fibers, would be my recommendation, as more abrasive materials could shred your dog's gums. Knowing your dog's habits is half the battle.

Check out your local hardware store and look at your options for bulk rope. You can pick your fiber and weight, get a bunch of it, and cut and tie it into a variety of shapes to see what works best.

Hi Jean, I have a terrier mix and he tears up ALL TOYS! Some one gave me a dinosaur and it lasted through him, 2 energetic young labs playing tug and other pups! It lasted almost a year and has now finally been torn apart by my dog. I found it on amazon. The company is goDog with Chew Guard-Technology. They have a variety of toys for ex-small, small, med. and large. Sometimes they are offered in a bundle of 3 or 4 for a great price. They also give their website where you can compare price. Hope this helps. -Kathleen D.

My puppy destroys toys in a matter of hours. Rope toys NEVER last. However, I've noticed tough rubber toys (like the Extreme Kong) work great! There are also tough rubber Frisbees out there too. I've also noticed that whenever my dog plays with rope she'll sometimes try to eat it. With the rubber ones she's never been able to tear it up to even swallow it.
