Visiting dog has a minor scratch. When to check with owner?

The dog that I am currently sitting for has a small scratch on his leg. I don't know exactly how he got it but I do know he didn't have it when he arrived. It does not seem like there is any blood or cause for alarm. Should I let the owner know immediately or when they come to pick the dog up ?

Go with your gut. Let the owner know--in a manner that shows you are in control and confident--that you believe it isn't a big deal and they shouldn't stress. Tell them what you've done to treat (cleaning it up and maybe a little anti-bacterial ointment) and how you will keep your eye on it and will let them know if anything develops.

Thank you! That is what I was leaning towards but I wanted the advice from some others here. I appreciate your input.

I agree with the others - it's worth a mention. Even if it's minor and doesn't require any treatment, it's nice to show the owners that you're attentive. I've had a dog get a tiny cut by their eye from crashing into a fence while playing, and I mentioned it to the owners as part of the updates when I noticed it, and pointed it out when they picked him up. Daycare centers do something similar, giving a report of any injury, no matter how small. As a dog owner, I'd be less concerned with a couple bumps and bruises than if the sitter seemed unaware of them, since to me that would suggest a lack of supervision and interaction.

I would never worry an owner if it is not necessary. You can always tell them when they get back. Tell them he was having so much fun with your dogs playing around and he got a little scratch, and that you've been watching it.

If it is just a minor scratch clean it and keep an eye on it. Is he with other dogs - yours and or other guests? Sometimes when they are romping and playing they can accidentally scratch with their toenail or a stick in the backyard. I wouldn't worry the owner right now and just mention it when the owner comes to pick up. If you are really concerned you can call rover.

He is just with my dog. I suspect it was just from playing, now that you mention a toenail scratch it looks like it could very well fit that size and description. It is clean and there is no blood (or signs that there was ever.) I prefer to be open with the owners but don't want them to stress.
