How can you keep your dog's ears from hurting during flight?

Whenever I fly with my dog the cabin-pressure changes hurt his ears. He is usually only in minor discomfort but sometimes he will yelp and cry (which is out of character). What can I do to help him pop his ears?

Great question. Best advise is to check with your veterinarian for something to keep him calm and/or relieve pressure. You may want to try a chew toy. One of my customers is a flight attendant and takes her little griffon with her on vacations to visit family. I asked her if the cabin pressure bothers her dog and she said no. She said she was giving him 1/2 a prescription pill to keep him calm for nervousness/anxiety but he flies so much with her he doesn't need it now. She said he gets forward in his crate before take off and goes to sleep. Hope this helps.

A chew toy/harder chewy treat like a dental bone or himalayan chew would be a great idea for mid-flight. They always tell humans to chew gum/suck on hard candy if they're experiencing earaches due to pressure changes (the saliva production prompts swallowing which helps open up the middle ear to equalize pressure).

Also curious about this. My problem is my little min pin wants nothing to do with treats if she's in pain or scared so I can't help her. I did try and massage by her ears a little though to try and get them to pop.

Clean dog ears prior to the flight helps.
