My dog was diagnosed with hypothyroidism any help would be great?

My Shih Tzu was just diagnosed with hypothyroidism and I was told is a lifetime issue. He is 9 years and had put on a little weight and was listless. He is now taking medication and is feeling a little better. Interested if anyone has a dog with this condition-is it something that a Shih Tzu commonly has, and how can I help him for the future?

Have you tried finding an online support group? I know they are out there, my sisters dog has Addison's disease and a support group is how she found most of her information. It's a good place to start!
