Not sure if I am overreacting or if this is creepy??...please help?

I've been sitting for a while and never have any issues. About two weeks ago a man asked me to dog sit for him for about 3 weeks coming up in Feb. I've already accepted the request without meeting yet because I have never had any issues. However..the man just joined rover so he didnt have any pictures of him or his dog on yet. He sent me one picture of his dog. We eventually exchanged numbers so we could communicate easier and so we could set up a time for me to go over to his house to meet his dog. A few days ago i receive a text from him and a selfie of him (He looks to be around 30 or older) . He told me happy new year and told me he wanted to send me a picture of what he looked like. Then he said "your turn" and wanted me to send a selfie back. I ignored this and just said happy new year. He then asked for me to send a picture again and I said okay (thinking it was a good idea for him to see what his dogsitter would look like) I just sent a picture of me from one of my vacations. He then replied back and said how pretty i was and that i was so stunning and that he didnt believe it was me because i was so pretty. I am 22 years old and he asked me at the beginning how old i was and i told him. However, his reply to the picture i sent him made me very uncomfortable and was unprofessional. Then at 3 am he sent me a text saying something like "cant get over the cute pic. I miss you and love you." Then at 11 am. he said "sorry that text was meant for a friend". So overall I am not sure what to do since i am feeling a little uncomfortable to go over to his house alone after he was basically hitting on me. I have already accepted the booking (mistake, i know) so i am not sure what i should do. Any suggestions??? Do you think it was creepy what he said or am i overreacting?

I would feel the same way if I got messages like that. Maybe you could call Rover and ask for advice on what to do.

That is SO creepy. I would immediately cancel the booking. stay safe.

I would 100% cancel this booking and see about reporting the user to Rover so he can't try this with anyone else.

Cancel the booking and contact Rover. I would contact Rover first actually. They should assist you in this and take this seriously because that is really innaproproate and scary. I bet he'd have security cameras set up on your stay. really want to hear about how rover handles this.

I would cancel the booking. Also, I'd be concerned about going to a pet owners house and not meeting in a neutral location (like a park). Also, definitely contact Rover about your concerns. Sounds like he's looking for a girlfriend, not a pet sitter.

Trust your gut feelings! Creepy for sure! Follow all the advice above... lookout for #1 first and foremost!

I also had an incident similar to this. The man asked if I lived alone, or if anyone might drop in unexpectedly, etc. It was a horrible stay. I contacted Rover, while they were empathetic, bottom line is you are on your own. Rover doesn't verify owner profiles. You really don't know who is showing up

Thanks everyone for your help. I decided to cancel the booking which he was angry about and tried to offer me more money to stay. I let Rover know this and sent them the screenshots and they flagged his profile and are opening an "investigation".

omg creepppyyyy. yuck!

Cancel the booking and lesson learned is never accept a booking until after a meet and greet, you may wish to do more of your meet and greets in a park or public location then you can visit the home a different time.

VERY CREEPY! Be safe!

Very creepy. Proud of you for trusting your gut and cancelling. More needs to be done to ensure sitter safety.

YIKES!!! report him to Rover and cancel your booking. So glad you went with your gut instinct to question his reply. SO CREEPY

No! Cancel and do not have any more contact with this man. That does not belong in this space of Rover business.

CANCEL and report to him to Rover. Honey don't break the rules ever for anyone. This guy is a jerk. Sad. Let me know if you need help. Block his number from contacting you. I was always worried about this being a little dangerous if one is not very very careful, Your safety comes 1st.

Thanks again everyone! Little update: I reported him to Rover and they have shut down his profile.

Creepy, definitely. You did the right thing in cancelling. I would always meet in a public place first and then if you decide to meet at the house at another time, bring someone with you. Too many creeps out there. And trust your gut.

Trust your gut. Trust. Your. Gut.

That DEFINITELY sounds creepy. Call Rover and let them know or you can also flag the conversation with a button in the conversation on the site. Rover should be aware of this guy. If you want to cancel because he is acting weird, that is ok! You should only take bookings where you feel safe. Rover's 24/7 number is [Edit: Rover’s contact options have changed. Cancel, he's a creeper. You have the right to refuse service. Period. And contact Rover so they can flag his profile (and so you have a record of reporting the issue if he contacts you again).

Hi Isabel,

I am sorry you had to experience this. It is disgusting behaviour. If you feel uncomfortable then you are not overreacting. Trust your gut in these situations and never follow through with a booking if you get weird vibes from the owner. No amount of money is worth your comfort.

In this situation, I would immediately call Rover to report the incident and find out the best way to proceed to cancel it to make sure that he is flagged or at least contacted by Rover about his inappropriate behaviour. Make sure that you take screen shots of the text messages so that you can send them to Rover.

I only maintain contact through the Rover app for exactly this reason. If an owner is asking you to communicate or operate outside of the site, it is usually a red flag. If owners give you an alternate contact number for emergencies, that is of course ok, but if they want to exchange numbers because it is "easier" that does not make sense given that Rover messages are sent via text to both parties anyway.

Please update us - I am very interested to hear how Rover deals with harassment.

Thanks for the response, Isabel. You definitely did the right thing. If he got upset over it he sounds like someone that you don't need to deal with ;)

If you decide to do a meet and greet before cancelling or before deciding to keep the booking, I would 100% bring a friend with you. They can come up to the door with you, or wait within sight of the front door. Keep it very professional and make it clear that whatever the text exchange was is not okay. I would also suggest keeping all communication through Rover from now on.

Don't feel bad AT ALL if you decide cancel. This guy crossed a line and should not be excused for his behavior.

I hope you canceled this booking. Your safety is more important than money! My question is does Rover do anything about this or is this person allowed to find another sitter? If he is, does Rover notify the new person to watch out? This is very concerning to me and I would hope he would be banned from using our services.

I am also hoping that Rover chooses to cancel his membership!

smash that cancel button and call rover! Other sitters need to be aware! If he wants to hit on someone online for free, go to craigslist...
