According to http://mysmartpuppy.com "Cat food is higher in fat and protein than dog food making it is as appealing to dogs as ice cream is to us. On the downside, that extra fat and protein can cause diarrhea in the short-term and weight-gain in the long."

Because food is food and dogs love food! Not to mention, cat food comes in a wider variety of flavors which intrigues the dog's interest.

The smell intrigues them. It is also higher in fat and protein as said above. I would HIGHLY recommend putting your cat food up somewhere the dog can't reach. This is not good for your dog long term. There is a reason there are separate dog foods and cat foods. I put my bowls up on a desk where the dogs can't reach it.
