Why do dogs eat cat poop?

It's so gross and I cannot get it to stop.

I've never had this happen except in one instance with a beagle. The beagle has been the ONLY one to ever try that, not sure why

I've worked with several vets in my 10+ years as a technician and they all told me that it's likely do to the fact that cats do not fully digest their food which goes in hand with the question "why do dogs love cat food so much?" All my dogs have a strong urge to eat "kitty caramels" it is disgusting, particularly if your dog is a kisser. :-( I went so far as to get a covered cat box which I placed in a china cabinet that my hubby cut a cat hole in so the dog can't get to it. Yuck!

This is similar to the reason why dogs eat grass. It is believed that dogs digest these non-convential things to promote the digestive process. Though it is normal behavior, it should be discouraged.

Not really sure why, but one thing that really helped my house is figuring out your cat's schedule and getting to it before the dogs can lol. Cause those guys are super persistent.

I think it's in there nature just like eating cat food.

My dog does that as well.

Cat poop is higher in fat, just like cat food. That's probably why they eat it. There are supplements available, but whether they work or not is anyone's guess. I haven't seen them work but I've seen a limited number of dogs.

When dogs eat out of the litter box it usually indicates a vitamin deficiency. Just as a pregnant woman may crave chalk or paint chips. You should try and switch his food or add supplements to his diet. Solid gold has some great supplements you can put right on their food. Or switch to a holistic food if your not already using one. And of course discourage this behavior while you are transitioning, it will take his system a month or so before he transitions and his vitamin levels go up to the correct level! Good luck! I've had this problem and it's not fun when they give you "kisses" or get in your face, !
