Why isn't my dog eating?

Does anyone else's dog do this? My dog's appetite has gone down recently and he doesn't seem to want to eat anything. Maybe he is unwell. What do you suggest I do?

I suggest seeing a vet before it becomes a bigger issue. The number one way a dog usually tells us something is wrong is when they aren't eating. On the other hand, some dogs (usually free fed) become picky - eat when they want. Not wanting to eat can be much bigger than just needing a new food.

If you're around your dog a lot of the time and notice that they aren't eating like they should, they could have some type of worm in their system, or could have some other type of infection. Keep an eye on their stool or vomit - you may be able to see if they have worms that way, but not always. If the desire to eat is persistently absent, take your furry friend to the vet immediately.

It’s normal to worry about a dog not eating food. Sometimes, the situation arises simply because the dog dislikes the food. Other times, the situation signals a health issue that needs attention. If you have a dog not eating food, assess the situation. Make sure the food you offer you pet is fresh. Old, stale food is not appetizing. If you have other pets, verify the dog not eating food is not snacking from other pet bowls or the garbage. Ask neighbors or other family members if they are giving out snacks to your pet. Your dog may simply be full from treats. Like humans, dogs like variety in their diet. A dog not eating might be bored. Try a different food.
