I'm confused about what to do if an animal I am sitting is injured or becomes sick in my care. Don't I get owner vet information at time of meet and take to owners vet?

Rover talks about insurance for pets but I haven't seen any info anywhere about this. Please advise...what do other dog sitters do?

Amber G. gave spot-on adice! You WILL have to have a written consent form signed by your client before their vet will treat the animal.

So, what I do on my initial meet-n-greet with a client is ask these things:

1) who is your vet? Before you accept the job make sure you know the address and phone number of the vet hospital. I always print out Google directions to their vet and have it handy. If some emergency pops up i do NOT want to waste time trying to find the vet. I have all the information ahead of time!

2) find a release form and have the client sign it. That way when you get to the vet you can hand it over so that they'll administer treatment.

3) I have a list of the three emergency/24 hour hospitals in town and know how to get to each one. I know which one is closest to my client. Ask your client at time of signing if, in case of emergency and the normal vet is closed, do they want you to take their pet to an emergency hospital (or, for instance, do they want you to call them first). Emergency visits are considerably more expensive, so have a plan AHEAD of time!

I had an incident with a sick poodle. Yes you do get the vet information from the owner. First thing you would want to do if you have a sick or hurt pet is call owner and Rover Support. If you cant reach the owner, Rover support will guide you. I had to learn the hard way that the vet will NOT treat the pet without a consent form from the owner. You can down load one from the internet. I give them to the customer at the meet and greet. I hope that helps. Happy safe sitting!

The insurance in just a reimbursement with a $250 deductible. It does not cover everything, like an excising condition the pet might have. In my case the poodle ate something at my home that made her really sick. So that was covered.

Thanks so much Amber!

I had i idea about the consent form. Here u thought if we had an emergency we go to the ER and I pay a $250 deductible and all else is covered.... Did not know about the consent form. Thank you

So we have to pay a 250$ deductible ? Do you bill the owner for that or is that just your loss?
