Should I let my dog eat grass?

Should I let my dog eat grass when we go on walks or play in the park? Does it damage his stomach or make digestion difficult?

Comments

Dogs eat grass for many reasons-it helps digestion, they're bored, they're hungry and it's there. It doesn't hurt them unless it's covered in pesticides or germs, so if he's only eating it on walks, it's probably better to just teach him to leave it because you don't know what might be on the grass.

I was told by my veterinarian that grass eating by dogs should not be allowed. The blades of grass going down and or coming back up can cause small cuts in the esophagus. I have always used coke syrup mixed with some water for an upset tummy. You should always check with your vet first.

Yes, you should let your dog eat grass. Dogs normally eat grass because they are having stomach pain and want to throw up, so if your dog is eating grass regularly, there may be an issue with its diet or it may have some kind of stomach complication. If this behavior continues, definitely go see the vet.

Dogs do not have the means to digest grass, as they lack the enzymes needed to break down the fibres. Thus, there is little nutritional value in it for them. One reason for eating grass may be due to a feeling of nausea. It is possible that dogs learn this is a temporary solution for stomach irritation.

Dogs eating grass is normally pretty safe unless it has been sprayed with pesticide or any other type of weed killer. Generally I try to avoid it unless it is in a yard that I know is safe. Dogs are not carnivores, they're more close to omnivores, that's why carrots make great snacks for dogs! Some clean grass won't hurt them and it might make their tummy feel better!

It's usually safe for them to eat grass unless it was sprayed with pesticides but my dog only eats grass when she has an upset stomach because it helps her throw up. She also eats grass if my rabbit does because she gets jealous that the rabbit is eating it and not her

Dogs eat grass when they have upset stomachs to help them settle their tummies. Grass will either come out throwing up or when they poop. They should not eat grass all the time, if they are you may want to take them into be seen for any issues.
