Does anyone have safe tips for keeping a home smelling fresh?

asked 2016-03-01 09:47:45 -0500

Our home always smells great! However, we have utilized the plug-ins and some people have shared that this could be hazardous if a dog would chew on it. I purchased a diffuser, but I haven't found the right oils maybe? I don't want people to smell "dog" when they arrive at our home. Suggestions?

I have found that good old-fashioned BAKING SODA works great on the carpet and pet bedding, which is where the majority of the smell comes from. Just sprinkle on about 30 minutes before vacuuming. Freshens the whole room. You can sprinkle some in the litter box as well!

I've just become great friends with my vacuum. I use 3 drops lavender in my diffuser and it works great! I have also used peppermint.

I mix Vinegar and water in a spray bottle and use a Steam Mop. Vinegar is great for removing odors and dirt. We brush our dog after he has been walked and I vacuum his pet beds. When he gets a bath, we wash all of his bedding, also.

“Purification” essential oil by Young Living is the only thing that has permanently removed odors in my home. Not our favorite scent, but after several days of diffusing, SUCCESS! A clean house, clean dog, clean bedding are also essential.

Use plug ins in higher places if your dog is a chewer, but the Febreeze plug ins works wonders for my home along with lighting a Bath and Body Works candle every 2 days for a few hours. Pine Sol is great for floors and smells wonderful! There is also the waterless shampoo (spray) for fur babies for those who do not get washed often due to either allergies or simply because their oils would be stripped if you bathe them too much :)

I use a cold vaporizer (similar to a scent diffuser but not heated) and add a small amount of essential oil to the water to keep everything smelling fresh. Works great even in my small apartment!

I take baking soda and put in a glass jar and mix it with essential oils to use as a carpet freshner, leave it on the carpet for 30-40 minutes and vacumme it up and voila, fresh smelling. I also have distilled water in a glass bottle mixed with a little baking soda and vinegar and essential oils that I use as my Febreeze. Also helps to leave a small glass jar of the carpet mixture mentioned above open in places your fury baby can't get to. Fresh, Fresh, Fresh.

I use diluted Lavender and mint essential oils in a spray bottle...on the dogs and carpet curtains and upholstery. I don't let them go without a bath and the same with their blankets. Lavender oil is known to prevent mosquito, fleas and ticks too!

A carpet cleaner used weekly or bi-weekly, a wax melty thing with nice scents (they last a long time), and constant cleaning. I will use the occasional candle but make sure it is up and away from pets! Natures Miracle really helps with spot cleaning too.

Cleaning is a constant thing with dog sitting, just to keep your home from smelling "doggy" and then comes the other smells.

I vacuum.... A LOT. I find that makes a huge difference. I make sure to do the couches too. You can sprinkle baking soda or other household powder deodorizers on the rug, let it sit and then vacuum it up.

I also have central air and every once in a while, I will run the fan (no air or heat) and the circulation makes a huge difference. Do that before company.

I use natural oils, I mix it with soap and water, or water and vinegar to create my own smells. I use lavender, eucalyptus and any other natural oil. Eucalyptus is a natural antibacterial so it disinfects areas on my counters and floors. For my carpets, rugs and dog bed I sprinkle baking soda leave for a while then vacuum. These tricks help keep my house clean and smelling fresh.

I learned this from my Mom: before a house party she would put a big pot of water simmering with some apples and a stick of cinnamon. Be sure to check and keep adding water !

I use odod ban to clean all hard surfaces including crates after each dog leaves. I also use the odo ban to freshen the air and area rugs. It is a disinfectant as well as odor remover.

Hello, I have two dogs and you would never know it. I think it is very important to bath you dogs regularly with a high quality shampoo. I wash the bedding the same day I give my pets a bath. I also like opening the windows to air out the house. If your dogs are clean your house will smell clean.. I know it is a pain to give a dog a bath especially if you have a big dog but your home will not smell like dog. Yankee candles are great also and will give your home a nice smell.

Your home will not smell like dog if your dog doesn't smell like one. I clean my dogs paws and underbelly everytime he goes for a walk. He is allowed on furniture and most people are surprised when they rub him. My dog sheds so I have to sweep and mop often.
