The coronavirus pandemic has changed the world and upended a lot of people’s typical summer travel plans. Summer is normally a peak travel season; kids are on summer break, and many view this as the perfect time to take a trip like a weekend getaway or even weeks-long vacation. But with COVID-19 on everyone’s minds, this year is a little different. Travel is restricted for some and others are choosing to stay closer to home.
So what’s a pet parent itching to see the world to do? Rover.com surveyed 500 Canadian pet parents to find out how they’re thinking about summer travel in light of the coronavirus. We found out that, yes, they’re still thinking about traveling, and they’re getting creative with how they plan to do it. Overwhelmingly, pet parents are opting for road trips, with a focus on getting outdoors. While many are hoping to travel in some capacity this summer, others are looking forward to spending more time at home, especially with their pets.
62.6% of pet parents are planning to or thinking about traveling this summer.
For the majority of pet parents (62.6%), the pandemic isn’t preventing them from thinking about or planning to travel this summer—in fact the opposite is true. The majority of pet parents still have travel on their minds this summer. However, the pandemic has changed how they’ll get to wherever they’re going.
67.5% of pet parents say they will likely travel this summer by car or RV.
Cars and RVs make seeing the world a bit safer—at least in terms of avoiding prolonged contact with other people—which is why 67.5% of pet parents say at least one of these modes of transportation will factor in to their summer travel plans this year. While pet parents are overwhelmingly opting for travel by car or RV, a close second was domestic air travel. 22% of pet parents claim that if they travel this summer, it will be by plane within Canada. Of those waiting to travel, though, more than half (58%) claim they’re waiting for a COVID-19 vaccine to make them feel more comfortable.
This summer is undoubtedly different than we originally imagined, but cozying up with our family—pets included—is okay by us.
