Mineral oil. I soak a cotton ball and wipe the ear out. Obviously staying current on the dog's ear care will prevent future problems. I start all the animals (canine, feline or equine )when they are first born by working with the ears, mouth, rectal temps....it all works to help the animal be comfortable with your 'invasion' later in life! As for the washes sold at vets/pet supply stores, look at the ingredients in the product....you can do the same at home and save money!!
