answered a question First dog boarding and I have some questions?

I agree with Karen, but to build up clientele you can let people know since it's their first booking you won't charge the extra cost. I did that with my first few customers and all of them are now regulars who have also recommended my services to friends. I'm sure they remember the favor when they leave feedback. It's a great option to build up your business and Rover allows you to edit each rate every time somebody books.

Take some treats and focus on a relaxed conversation with the owner since he is protective of his owner. Let the dog approach you without paying much attention. When he does, give a treat. Let him slowly get to know you but don't underestimate your instincts, your safety is very important. You can meet the owner at a dog park so there is some distraction for the dog. Maybe the dog will not feel the need to be as protective of his owner in that setting. Good luck.

commented question Has anyone ever had an owner NOT show up to get their dog when their booking is complete?

Yes. I tried contacting them several times without any luck after they were several hours late. When it got close to bed time, I called Rover. They were very helpful, were somehow able to contact the owners who then showed up within 10 minutes claiming they forgot where I lived. Great Rover support.

answered a question What do you do when clients don't tell you the full truth?

Dogs are very inquisitive and smart and sometimes get into trouble in a new environment simply because they are trying to get to something that smells delicious or because they are bored. If there are no signs of destructive behavior at a customer's home or according to what they tell you, it's still a good idea to play it safe and treat the dog like you would a newly adopted dog you introduce to your home. If you need to leave your home for a brief period of time, I feel the safest thing for the dog (so they don't get into anything that could harm them) and for your home is to put them in a crate with a treat.
