answered a question Is it OK to give my dog Fish Oil to help with his dry skin?

It’s a good thing for his skin when it’s bad but you’ll know when his skin is bad. It usually has dandruff and gets very dry. It honestly sounds like he has allergies. Before depending on fish oil tablets, I would give him baths in shampoo with oatmeal in it and give him an antihistamine. My spaniel gets a full benedryl. But talk to your vet if that doesn’t help. There’s other skin problems out there. You can also give your dog dried fish skin as a treat that I find is a much better source than the tablets as one is made for the quanity the dog is supposed to be given and the other is the quantity a human is supposed to be given.

commented answer hOW TO STOP A DOG BITTING ?

I just want to say that the only time we muzzle him is to clip his toes and shave him down for summer. He doesn’t like the razor too much.

answered a question hOW TO STOP A DOG BITTING ?

My family’s chorkie came from an abused home and for years he would protect those who were just rough housing or high fiving or kissing. Even now he does but instead it is just a growl. What we have done with him (it took us years, we called it rehab for Jack) is every time we were about to kiss or high five we could feel him gearing up to protect and we would suddenly switch motives and say “It’s okay Jack!” And kind of do that over and over again. He was crated for a while in another room because if you move at night he attacks your feet and now he just goes to that crate. And because he shows no remorse for his attacking we had to go the positive reinforcement route. So lots of love while we hugged. We cooed at him while we got closer. We made sure he knew he was in a secured place. His life is secured. Does he have a collar by chance? I know that all of the dogs I know who have collars think of them as belonging somewhere. When they are taken off they get nervous and when they see you are putting it back on they get excited. My cat even feels that way. Perhaps that could help as well. Is he as comfortable with your s/o as he is with you? Perhaps the s/o should have days where it’s just them. Have your s/o take him for walks or to get vanilla ice cream at dq. Do things that your dog will dream about and bond with to him. And maybe do the same to your dog as well? Perhaps he sees him as someone moving in because he hasn’t bonded to him because of his past and everyone just has to make that extra effort. I know it has really helped my family in the end. Even though Jack is considered my dad’s dog, he used to hate my dad and would protect all of us girls and the cats from him. Now my dad is the best guy in the house because he took the time to know Jack.

commented answer What if the dogs owner wants the dog to see a vet?

That’s what we always go to before we do anything else as well. 3 dogs and 2 tons of boiled rice and chicken later...

answered a question dog that won't eat?

My mom always taught me that if they won’t eat their dog food now, try in an hour, if they still won’t, try scrambling an egg (keeping it slightly warm), and placing it in with the food. Some dogs get really snappy and cranky the more they don’t eat. So I would rather go the extra mile to get them to eat than deal with their cranky butts when I go to take them for a walk and they won’t let me touch them to put a leash on them.

answered a question My dog constantly sits/lays down on walks. She becomes dead weight to pick up and refuses to budge. She only exhibits this behavior when I walk her - when my boyfriend walks her, she's the complete opposite. How can we fix this behavior?

Well there you have it. It’s a golden! Obviously it’s a golden! I swear, goldens are the life of the party but also the silliest. I had something for you. But now I don’t. Goldens are one of the smartest breeds I know and your dog knows exactly how to get your goat. Maybe try showing your golden that you are also the boss in the house hold? The pup sees your husband as leader, dominant but sees you as someone to toy with. Walk with purpose but on your downside when you guys aren’t walking, don’t let him get away with anything. If he’s in your spot on the couch, make him get off the couch so you can sit there. Make him lay down when you want him to. Before you put a leash on make him sit every time. You need to show him that you can also be in control. Of course you can also play with him but you also need to show that stuff ain’t going to fly with you. So that when he lays down, you are going to get down there with him, put your face in his face and bare your teeth at him and strictly yell at him.

It’s honestly how I got my springer mix to finally listen to me. He was doing the same exact playbook to me. When you finally get him walking, keep walking like you mean it.

answered a question Husky keeps escaping???

I’ve heard vets mention that the best time for dogs to get neutered is always before their hormonal instinct kicks in because once it does, it becomes habit, even if you neuter them after the fact. And every husky I’ve ever known has always escaped. Thankfully you aren’t the only owner out there that has a dog on the run every day. Make sure to exercise the dog physically and mentally. Are there any hiking trails nearby? Do you have beaches? Does he like to swim? Take him to the dog park after his stitches are good and ready and he will love it. Is he incredibly hyper or low enough energy that you could bike with him?

These are the questions. Always remember water and treats.

answered a question What do you include in your dog first aid kit?

All of what was said above minus the Peroxide because you can’t use it on their bare skin (it can dissolve it). You really have to know what you are doing with it. I keep baby benedryl for when a dog seizes after getting a hold of a bad toad, tweezers, clean spoon that is sturdy (won’t bend). This would be for when the dog picks up any bones and clenches so freaking hard that your hands can no longer get it out of their mouth because it is now lodged and stuck. I’m also thinking about keeping a low dose of vodka in there for antifreeze problems if there ever comes a day. I’m going to the vet for my own dog today, so I can ask for a hot second.

commented question my puppy wont take a walk with me solo but will with my girlfriend why?

You aren’t leading. When you walk you need to take off like you are leading, not like the pup is. It happened to me with my boyfriend’s dog. He wouldn’t walk with me but would walk with him. The trainer told me I have to be confident in my walking skills and leash skills.

commented question Why does my dog bark at other people?

Everything the light touches, she owns.
