Whenever I see such a significant behavior change like this one of my first thoughts is a medical issue. Although this definitely could be separation anxiety this also sounds like there may have been something causing the dog a lot of pain. Especially with him screaming bloody murder when you touch him I would say that points more to a medical condition than separation anxiety. You can often see this as well with dogs that suddenly become aggressive when no aggression has previously been exhibited.
