I used a hand signal like a bird beak talking and would just wait til my dog would get herself riled up enough to bark and then immediately show her that symbol and treat her while saying speak! in a happy voice. It's all about timing- the dog has to know that their noise is what you're pleased about.

Teaching speak was the best thing- now I can tell my dog "no speak" when i want her to be quiet, and "whisper" using the same signal with one finger over my lips like the SHhhh sign. Again, all timing with praise and getting them to do the action on their own first.

I know Deferents ways to tach a dog to Speak. When a dog Speaks to you , the make a sound name Bark on the other hand as humans dogs use body language to let you know what the want to tell you. here is a link that may answer this question better than I CAN DO.

Depends on what your dog wants to do. Can you reliably make him bark using a toy or a doorbell? Get out the treats!

I taught my Chihuahua to bark on the word "speak" while I make the speak sign with my hand. I gave her praises and a treat each time she did the command. Then I did the same with the word "enough". I waited for the "speaking" to stop and said the word "enough " after she was quiet for about a minute I gave her praises and a good treat.
