blood in dog stool?

asked 2020-05-17 20:38:59 -0500

earlier I noticed small amounts of blood in my dogs poop. she didn't have diarrhea and the blood wasn't bright red it was a little more to dark side but not quite dark. The poop itself was a normal brown color and wasn't tarry or black. My dog is currently behaving normally. I changed her food from beef dry dog to lamp with venison dry dog food if that helps.

It's great that your dog's behavior is normal . Very happy to hear it wasn't tarry or black, that's often significant internal bleeding and dried blood passed through rectum. Bright red pops of color may indicate straining and are less concerning than dark red. Dark red indicates the presence of internal bleeding. When you change a dog' diet that may explain colors of stool (like in a gradient spectrum, from extra light milky latte to dark chocolate).

I'd suggest if the Monday morning stool looks off, bag it, call your vet, and ask if they'd like you to bring it in. They can if they're doing curbside arrival&pickup, possible costs of fecal tests, discuss dog's complete health history & status updates and best advise.
