Why does my dog bark at people and other dogs?

She barks at the mailman (highlight of her day), other dogs and people that walk by the house. During her walks if she sees another dog, she goes totally ballistic. I've been pulled down several times.

One reason is she may be acting in protective mode for her owner/you. Both giving a warning to stay away from you and your home. This can sometimes be resolved by slowly introducing her to other people and dogs. Maybe do a buddy walk with her and another pet owner with their dog. Hope this helps.

I agree with the training. My dog had the same problem but only with other dogs, not people. Found a great trainer that worked with a group of similar dogs. Learned a lot of dog psychology and did a lot of exercises around the other dogs. He got so he could do group walks with those dogs.He is mch better now but still doesn't like it if an unleashed dog comes up to him. I stick to neighborhoods and streets, no more walk in the woods where people tend to let their dogs off leash more. never could have gotten him even this far without the trainer.

YIkes! Being pulled down during a walk is scary. It sounds like at this point, you really need to work with a trainer before something dreadful happens. Please look up positive training to start reading about it and locate a trainer that uses those methods.

Your dog is insecure because he is aware he doesn't have a strong leader. Hire a trainer for private lessons, that should help.
