How well does benadryl work for general sedation?

what dosage?

Comments

Your veterinarian may prescribe your dog Benadryl for anxiety or motion sickness as the drug can cause drowsiness. The proper dosage depends on your dog's weight and health condition.

Benadryl is not meant for general sedation. If you need to sedate your dog, you really should direct that to your vet. There may be better alternatives based on what's needed and the vet can discuss in detail.

Benadryl (generic name Diphenhydramine) is commonly used following a bee sting to prevent anaphylactic shock and for mild allergies and may make a dog a little drowsy.

The usual recommendation is only 1 MG per every LB two to three times a day (so if the tablets are 25 MG and the dog weighs 12 LBs = half of a tablet).
