Here at Rover, it’s not a stretch to say we obsess over pet names. Every year we release data on the top dog names in Canada, but this year we wanted to do things differently. Curious about what the name rankings for cats looked like, we dug into our huge database of pet names to reveal the most popular cat names of 2019. But we didn’t stop there!

Inspired by all the creative and unique pet names in our database, we decided to round up the very best black cat names across the country. Looking for the perfect name for your new black cat? This is a great place to start.

We’ve covered a lot of ground here: there are names for cheeky black cats. Lazy black cats. Elegant black cats. From Shadow to Raven to Bellatrix, there’s a name on this list for every type of black cat.

We get it. Your new cat is part of the family, and their name deserves to be special. Finding the perfect black cat name doesn’t have to be difficult, though. Especially with the many lists of pet names we’ve uncovered to inspire you!

To brainstorm names for your black cat, first consider their personality. Are they a spirited “Jet” or an aristocratic “Tux”? What about an independent “Bagheera”  or a sweet “Poe”? Think about his habits and his general disposition, and you’ll be on your way to a great name.

Your interests and hobbies can also be sources of inspiration. Cat owners are looking at their favourite characters, musicians, books, flowers, movies, and foods for ideas. Stretch your imagination and consider names unrelated to your cat’s black coat. Maybe a name like “Finn” or “Millie” would suit your black cat better than the popular “Luna” or “Midnight.”

You know your cat better than anyone else. So get those creative juices flowing, and give your black cat a name that’s as remarkable as she is!

10 Black Cat Names Inspired by Night

Of course, we don’t buy the old wives’ tale that unfairly labels black cats as symbols of bad luck. Nevertheless, some of the most beautiful black cat names play on the idea of mystery, spirituality, and darkness. These are the most popular night-related black cat names.

In general, names that reference the moon or the night are very popular for cats, but are especially popular for black cats. We can see why, since the black cat has long been associated with all things mysterious and supernatural.

  1. Luna
  2. Midnight
  3. Thunder
  4. Star
  5. Sparkle
  6. Twilight
  7. Moonshine
  8. Astro
  9. Nyx (Greek goddess of the night)

Luna: Canada’s Hottest Cat Name

Let’s talk about Luna, shall we? This name is not only the most popular name for black cats, but also for cats of EVERY colour. What is it about this name that has cat owners hooked? Derived from the Latin name for “moon,” Luna is everywhere for cats, dogs, and human babies alike.

We’re guessing there are a number of factors at play. For one thing, of all the night-related cat names, Luna is one of the most feminine. (Others include Shadow and Midnight, for example.) Not only that, but Harry Potter fans have the ethereal Luna Lovegood to thank for inspiration. And don’t rule out anime lovers who might have chosen Luna as a nod to the cat character on the long-running show Sailor Moon.

Luna is also a surprisingly popular name for human babies, where it’s risen to the ranks of Canada’s 50 most popular girl baby names of 2018. That’s an impressive stat, and it appears that cat owners are just as taken with the name as new parents.

Need Cat Sitting?

Cats seem more independent than dogs, but they still need attention, play, and treats when you’re gone. Your black kitty deserves the best care—and nothing less. You’ve found the best black cat name (hopefully), so now it’s time to find the perfect cat sitter.

Find your cat’s perfect match right from your phone—and then hit the road happy.
