Trends in Girl Cat Names
Across the board, we’re seeing a big lift in human names for cats (and dogs, for that matter!) While word names like Cinder and Snow are still big, along with character names like Tigger, Felix, and Simba, the cat names with the biggest growth are also popular baby names.
That means cat lovers are choosing Mary, Millie, and Samantha (nickname Sam, of course) as kitten names rather than Lady or Kitty. Hipster baby names also find their way into our popular cat name data. Names like Poppy, Paris, and Ziggy are hot for kittens and newly adopted cats just as they are for trendsetting human babies.
God and goddess names for cats are also on the rise, with Loki and Apollo big for the boys and Athena ranking higher than ever in girl cat names. Picks like Artemis and Juno are climbing, too.
Luna: The Year’s Hottest Cat Name
What is it about Luna? This lovely name, which means “moon” in Spanish, has shot up the rankings for popular cat names.

We’re guessing it’s a combination of factors. Cat names associated with nighttime and the moon are generally popular, perhaps accounting for the sheer number of black cats out there—and of those nocturnal choices, Luna is clearly the most feminine of the lot. (Others include Shadow and Midnight, for example). Not only that, Harry Potter fans have the ethereal Luna Lovegood as an inspiration.
But at the end of the day, Luna is a surprisingly popular name for human babies, where it’s risen to the top 50 girl baby names in Canada in recent years, according to Canada Babycenter’s Top Baby Girls’ Names of 2018. It appears that cat owners are just as taken with it as parents of new babies.
