When an Aussiedoodle catches your eye, you fall instantly in love. I know, because it happened to me! The Aussiedoodle, also called the Aussiepoo, Aussiepoodle, or “Big Ball of Fluff” (a term I coined), is a mix between an Australian shepherd and a poodle. Full-grown dogs range in size from 9 to 30 kilos, depending on if they’re a “Toy,” “Mini,” or “Standard.” They come in different colors and patterns, but the most popular is merle.
Regardless of color, all Aussiedoodles are dashing. They’re bred to be companion dogs, much like other doodle dogs.
It’s important to learn more about their temperament and quirks before committing to adding an Aussiedoodle to your life. As many current owners will tell you, these are the top 10 things to know about these fluffy dogs.
1. They like to share (except when they don’t)

Aussiedoodles are very playful and like to bring you gifts. However, they’re also big teases—they’ll show a fellow dog their toy, but then run away with it. In fact, playing chase is one of their favorite games. They’ll eventually give it up, but not before starting an intense game of tug-of-war.
2. Aussiepoos are bouncy
Just like Tigger, they’re bouncy, trouncy, fun! It’s no wonder that they’re masters of agility training. They can jump as if there isn’t a bone in their body, and will fearlessly lunge at anything and everyone in their path (all for play, of course.)
If you do decide to teach them agility, you’ll want to keep a close eye, because they’ll learn to jump over fences. If only dogs were allowed to play football…
3. They want their family nearby at all times
One common characteristic of the Australian shepherd is the development of separation anxiety, and Aussiedoodles can share this trait.
The positive side to this is that they make friends easily, and everyone they meet is instantly part of their pack. They’re loyal companions who want to grow their family, so you can definitely say they like people!
4. Aussiedoodles crave constant attention
But that’s not such a bad thing, right? After all, what’s better than unconditional love? Sometimes they whine, but only so you know that they are there and available for kisses and snuggles any time you are ready to give them some.

5. Don’t be surprised if you wake up with one sleeping on your head.
It doesn’t matter their size, they’ll want to cuddle with you. If you allow Aussiedoodles on the bed, be prepared to make it a nightly tradition. As soon as you invite them up, they’ll find a comfortable spot, even if it means hogging the sheets.
It’s the perfect situation when it’s cold outside because there’s no need to turn on the heater. That’ll give you extra funds to buy more doggie toys, so it’s a win/win for both of you.
6. They like to work
Both Aussies and poodles are working breeds. Poodles are water retrievers and Australian shepherds are famous herders. Because of their working dog statuses, Aussiedoodles are considered a highly active breed.
Aussiepoos live to please and like to be given tasks, thus for these busy little dogs, learning tricks can be just as important as running around to keep both mind and body engaged.
7. Aussiepoos resemble stuffed animals (and their coats are not low-maintenance)
Poodles are hypoallergenic dogs, but Australian shepherds have a smooth, dual coat of hair. Because of this, Aussiedoodle hair is soft, but they generally don’t shed very much. They can be groomed in many different ways, depending on your preference.
Their coats can be shaggy and fluffy (which requires daily brushing and monthly grooms), or can be short with soft curls, which is great for summer. They are not low-maintenance dogs when it comes to hairstyles, but it’s worth the effort to have a dog that looks like a cartoon character.
8. Beware the doodle drip
When Aussiedoodles drink water, it soaks into the beard and drips onto the floor. They can’t hide from you very easily—just follow the trail of water drops around the house.
A doodle beard is always clean because it’s always wet! You definitely can’t call Aussiedoodles “dainty drinkers.”
9. They really, really love to swim
Sometimes a dog just needs to cool off. Or maybe they like to show off their Olympic skills? Either way, a trip to the beach and a swim in the ocean is good bonding time for you and your pup.
If you don’t live near the water, a hose or sprinkler will do. Aussiedoodles like to help with gardening by grabbing the hose and shaking it around, and sometimes they even stick their face and paws in their water bowls. It might not be the best way to swim, but at least they are good at improvising.
10. Aussiepoos make wonderful therapy dogs
They’re in tune with your needs and know when you’re having a rough day, which is why many Aussiedoodles are used as service, therapy, and emotional support dogs. Gentle to all people and animals, they know you need them just as much as they need you. And that’s the best feeling in the world.
