Vancouver is a bustling city, so escaping for a little nature hike with your pooch can be a welcome break for both of you. Take a look at our top picks of the best hikes in and around Vancouver – from forested walks to mountain trails – discover a hike that will be perfect for you and your dog.
1. Lighthouse Park Trails, West Vancouver
Located along the shores of West Vancouver
This gorgeous park trail is dog friendly, making it the perfect playground for your pet. If you’re looking for something a little less strenuous, this 4km trail is ideal.
Lighthouse Park is a great option for a more relaxed hike that will allow you to soak in the scenery with your dog. There are many different routes to suit any kind of hiker, so no matter whether you want to lap up the sunshine, or take a more shaded path, the options are there.
The beautiful forested trails are really popular, especially in the Summer when our dog pals can get too hot if they’re walking in direct sunlight. The Lighthouse itself is accessible via several of the forested trails that feature many stunning viewpoints on the way up. This Vancouver hike is the perfect chilled out Sunday treat for you and your pup.
2. Stawamus Chief Hike
Located near Squamish, north of Vancouver
This stunning hike offers amazing views across Howe Sound and several mountains in Garibaldi Provincial Park. It’s a firm favourite for those who are looking to get that picture perfect view and some good exercise along the way.
Be warned though, if you’re a puppy or small dog parent, they won’t appreciate this hike. It is dog-friendly, but the trail isn’t suitable for small dogs or puppies, so consider Doggy Day Care if you’re a small dog mom or dad.
It’s a lovely long hike, so come prepared with the right gear for dog hiking and some snacks and water to keep you going. At 11km, you and your dog will definitely get your steps in for the day and will be able to spend some quality time together as you enjoy the beautiful natural landscape.
3. Dog Mountain
Located near Mount Seymour, north east of Vancouver
Dog Mountain is aptly named, as it’s ideal for dogs of all sizes. It’s a shorter hike than some of the others at 4.5km, but features stunning views and some great spots to sit down and have lunch.
It’s located near North Vancouver, and is a popular hike for dog owners because of the incredible views of the lake. If you’re looking for somewhere to enjoy a casual hike with plenty of spots to sit and enjoy the scenery, then Dog Mountain is the one for you.
4. BCMC Trail
Located near North Vancouver
Sadly, this hike isn’t dog-friendly, but is well worth the trip. It’s only 3km one way, with a compulsory Mountain Gondola ride back, so you won’t have to leave your dog with a dog sitter for too long.
This stunning Vancouver hike is located east of the Grouse Grind, and takes you from the base of the Grouse Mountain all the way up to the chalet, with some amazing viewpoints along the way. Naturally, as it’s a mountain trail there are some steep slopes, so be sure to wear the right clothes and prepare for a good workout.
5. Capilano Pacific Trail
Located at the border of North and West Vancouver
The Capilano Pacific Trail is a dog-friendly trail that your pet will love. It’s quite a fair hike at 7.5km, however it offers beautiful sea views that make it a stunning weekend walk.
The hike begins in the dog walk area of Ambleside Beach and stretches all the way to Capilano Lake in the North. It’s a relaxing and very beautiful trail with lots of viewpoints that are perfect to rest tired legs (whether that’s yours or your pups!). Your dog will love all of the open spaces to run around in, and whilst there are a few little inclines, it’s nothing too strenuous.
