Wildlife ecologist who loves pets!
Pet care experience
Lifelong experience (20+ years) with large dogs (75-175 pounds) and exotic birds. 10 years of experience with fish. 5 years of experience with reptiles and amphibians. I am a wildlife ecologist trained in animal biology and behavior. I am a dog lover and specifically love large dogs. I have had 7 dogs throughout my childhood and early adulthood (Scottish terrier, lab, collie, pit, chow chow, husky, great dane). I have helped 6 dogs through end of life care and am comfortable organanizing and administering medications and physical therapies. I also have a few years of personal experience petsitting for AKC show dogs (Newfoundlands). I do not currently have any dogs or cats in my rental home, so I shouldn't be a problem for pets who are uncomfortable with the scent of other animals. I have a blue and gold macaw who has been with me for over 20 years (but is currently living with my parents), and have also had an African grey parrot, so I am comfortable handling exotic birds of all sizes. My current pets are a pair of African cane toads that I am fostering for Michigan Tech during the COVID crises. I also have experience with turtles and tortoises, as well as axolotls, snakes, and lizards. I have ball python handling experience and am comfortable with large snakes. I can care for both freshwater and saltwater fish and maintain proper aquarium chemistry. I am less comfortable around cats and aggressive/excitable small dogs due to previous injuries, but this can usually be remedied by a simple meet and greet ahead of time to ensure your pet won't react poorly to me if you're not present.
Reviews
Toby has such a great time with Tess!
Cats still alive +2 stars. Contrary to requests visit photos not taken, cat liter not cleaned, and food bowls empty when i returned -3 stars.
Tess was amazing with my cat! She went above and beyond during Toby's drop-in visits and he clearly had a blast. I would highly recommend her as a sitter and book her again in a heartbeat.
Tess did a fantastic job taking care of our pets. Our dog Ollie can be hesitant with new people, but Tess persisted and got him to warm up which is an accomplishment. Tess was very communicative and sent picture updates regularly. She even came back the day after the sitting period was over, when our flight was delayed. We would recommend Tess to care for your crew.

Safety, trust & environment
I live in a rental home that does not allow cats or dogs; boarding services in my home are limited to amphibians, reptiles, and possibly small birds (in cage) on a case by case basis.
Information Tess P. would like to know about your pet
Temperament, activity level, and any special needs are important for me to know. I would also like to know about favorite toys or activities. I have the most experience with large and extra-large breeds and have a special fondness for pit and pitty mixes.
A typical day
If timing and conditions are good, we can head over to the tech trails or other public and pet access areas for a change of scenery, or we can just cruise the neighborhood. We can play with toys or learn new skills and tricks! We can also have calm downtime for grooming or naps.

I am a full time graduate student who worked from home. I am a year-round resident so I have 24/7 availability in the Houghton/Hancock area including minor holidays (some major holidays possible)
