Responsible, Reliable, Trustworthy!

Pet care experience

Highly experienced, trained animal caregiver with over 20 years of diverse background. Spent the last 6 years as a supervisor at a Kitten Nursery in SLC (medical facility for kittens), but have also been a zookeeper, veterinary assistant, and wildlife rehabilitator/wildlife sanctuary manager. I have been doing petsitting "on the side" and have been lucky enough to meet so many amazing people and their animals along the way! I am comfortable around your cats, dogs, fish, small mammals, birds, reptiles...and any special needs or medications they require. Although I am not officially certified in animal first aid/CPR, I have been working under veterinary supervision for many years and am confident in what issues to look for and what is a medical emergency, as well as how to respond. I will be pursuing certification in the near future. I am very experienced and comfortable with giving oral medications, providing subcuteanous fluid therapy, topical medications, eye meds, etc. Your expectations from me should be that your animals will be treated the same as my own personal pets - which is the best I possibly can in every way. Let's talk more about your needs and see if I am the right fit for what you are looking for.

Shemia has a way with animals. They love her and she loves them. She really cares and she definitely knows what she’s doing. There aren't many people I trust to take care of my furbabies but Shemia is at the top of the list!

I would trust Shemia with my own pets....and I'm a veterinarian! Shemia is trustworthy, knowledgable and very compassionate and I would love to see her pop up as my caretaker in Rover! I would also add that if there are any medical concerns such as regular scheduled care like medications, insulin, or other prescribed treatments Shemia would be a great caretaker because she has some great background caring for animals under treatment.. so of it's a walk for Fido...or a walk, a pill and an injection...either way I'd be happy to have Shemia show up to take care of my pets!

Shemia has taken care of not only my dogs and cats, but my horses also. She is 100 percent trustworthy, and also stayed at my house many times.I never had to worry about leaving her in charge, knew my kids would be safe in her care. We also worked together in a Veterinary Clinic, and I have firsthand knowledge of how good she is with animal care. Your dogs could not find a better caregiver than Shemia.

Shemia is great with my pets. She knows their personalities, picks up on anything out of character with them and spoils them. I know I don't need to worry when she's got them.

Information Shemia S. would like to know about your pet

During a meet and greet, I like to get to know a general routine of what the animal's "normal" day involves, any medical concerns, special needs, behavioral issues (are they pullers on a leash? high energy? overstim cat? food reactive? mouthy etc.), special needs, veterinary contact information if you have it. Don't worry; I have a list of information and we go through it when we meet for the first time. I do not have any breed bias or discrimination and welcome all breeds. It's easier for me when clients are transparent about any issues because it helps me better tailor my time with your animal, as well as make sure that time is safe for him/her. The more I know about your animal(s), the better care I can provide! Most visits are based on a 30-minute timeframe, and we can talk about other options as well.

A typical day

In general, we will walk in your neighborhood. We can discuss walks in other areas that would involve a car ride outside of your neighborhood if that is something you'd prefer. We can also discuss other activities (play times, fetch, dog parks, etc.) dependent upon factors such as if you have a fenced yard, dog temperament and triggers, etc. All is open to discussion! For cats, we will also attempt some play sessions or grooming/brushing time, or just hanging out if the cat(s) is interested. Sometimes people tend to think that cats are so self-sufficient that they don't require anything while their people are gone, but cats DO miss their people. The signals and body language are just more subtle. Of course, there are still those felines who prefer to keep to themselves no matter what situation comes up - and that's ok too!
