From the day I was brought home from the hospital I’ve had a furry companion. Throughout my life I’ve grown up with a dog by my side every step of the way. I began rescue work at the age of five, volunteering actively with Basset Hound Rescue of Southern California where I worked as a child tester. Even at such a young age I understood dogs on a personal level and could read them enough that the organization trusted me to be around their animals. As I grew up, my responsibilities also grew, until I became the dominant leader of BHRSC’s adolescent volunteers. I assisted in my mother to train her Rottweiler, who is her Emotional Support Animal. He is also in the process of his Therapy dog training to achieve his certification to work directly with Veterans. Since I was young I’ve been watching the neighborhood dogs while their owners were out of town. This includes, but isn’t limited to a deaf Great Dane, an aggressive chihuahua mix and an excitable German Shepherd Lab mix. Leaving is never an easy thing to do, even if the destination is a picture of paradise. Your best friend is staying behind and you’ll always wonder what they’re doing and how they are.
