I generally like to let the animals just be themselves and do their own thing, and let them determine how much interaction they want with me. If they want to play, I'm happy to play with them. If they want to curl up on my lap or near me, that's fine by me. I'm also attentive to their needs and prefer to take them out for walks, feed them, etc more on their schedule, not mine. Thus far I haven't let any of the dogs who have stayed in our apartment sleep in my bed or run around in my room, but that's more a cleanliness and quiet zone matter than any discomfort or dislike of being around them. I have a full-time job so later afternoon/evening sittings are definitely preferred if the animal needs a lot of attention. Otherwise I can nearly always find an hour during the day to visit a home, as long as they are not too far away (no more than a 15-20 minute public transport trip from Chinatown). I'm prepared to discipline pets if they act up (barking too much, playing too rough with other pets, etc), but I vastly prefer verbal over physical discipline and like to find opportunities later to give them treats. It's so much more fun to reward good behavior than punish bad behavior! My current roommate is also my petsitting guru and has already taught me so much. She's also easy to reach by phone and email and I can always get help or advice from her should the need arise. She also usually has access to a car in our building so transportation is an option.
