Always home, fenced yard, big trees

Pet care experience

Looking for a Dog Heaven? You just found it! My house and yard are set up for dogs, with doggie doors that go out into a large yard with a 6 ft high, solid wood privacy fence and lots of room to run around. There's always something going on out there because it is a certified wildlife area with mature trees, bushes, squirrels, birds, chipmunks, bird feeders, bird baths, the works. Lots of things to smell and plenty of room to play catch or fetch, chase some pesky squirrels, or just relax in the shade on a chaise lounge with me and my dog Callie. Dogs have been part of my life for the past 20+ years. They give so much and ask so little in return. Every dog deserves a kind and safe home, healthy food, clean water, a loving environment, good playmates, and lots of love and attention from their humans:-)! After all, dogs are people, too! I really like trying to figure out what a dog is thinking. What does their body language mean? Why did they do what they just did? And most importantly, how can I help them better understand the confusing world of humans. Every moment is an opportunity to communicate with positive (never negative) reinforcement whether it be a treat, or a pat on the head, or a game of fetch, or an encouraging word, or even just a smile. I love to connect with them. Let me know if you want help with basic training like sit, come, lie down, and stay. It's fun for them and fun for me. And you'll be amazed at the fast results. (Cesar Millan says it takes longer to train humans then dogs and I think he is right! :-) ) But of all the things, I really just like having dogs around--they are the best company you could ask for. I have been very privileged to have owned four wonderful, smart, and loving dogs and I learned a lot from each one. I will take really good care of yours for you too, if you need some help.

Sandra is amazing. She cared for our dog for 10 days during a long vacation. She kept us in to date with photos and videos. I could not have asked for a better experience.

Sandra did an amazing job of taking care of Skippy! She followed everything that we suggested and we felt so fortunate to have found Sandra on Rover. He was in great hands and you can tell that she is a dog lover.

Information Sandra W. would like to know about your pet

Is the dog up to date on their shots? On heartworm, flea & tick medications or other meds? Is the dog aggressive toward other dogs or cats? Do they have a special diet? Does the dog bark a lot? Dig or climb fences? Or have other traits that would make it hard to keep them safe? Is it ok to take the dog on walks?

A typical day

Rain, snow, sleet or sunshine, I walk 1 to 3 miles just about every day in the forest preserves nearby with my little 15# rescue dog Callie. She is getting older and sometimes gets tired, so I scoop her up and put her into a little doggie backpack for a while. We are both used to walking with up to 3 dogs at a time. There is nothing like a good long walk outside with lots of smells and new things to see to make a dog happy and well-balanced. Also, I have adopted 2 rescue dogs and been a foster parent for rescued dogs for a few years.
