Empowering Canine Americans

Pet care experience

"When I die I want to be reincarnated as one of your dogs"--my mother "Oh, that would be good"--me I volunteered with the Oregon Humane Society from 2000 to 2002. I figured why adopt a dog when I could have dozens of dogs every weekend. Then I met Rebel who made me a doggy daddy in December 2001. Over the last 15 years I've welcomed 4 more permanent additions to the pack (and had to say goodbye twice). I've also fostered 3 more dogs on short-term bases (including a placement through the Pixie Project to a great forever home for Scarlett). I once blew a job interview when the CEO asked me if I could do anything I wanted and make a million dollars a year doing it what would it be. My answer was "hang out with my dogs." Maybe the right answer was hang out with my dogs AND your dog(s)...

Rich was a great host--communicated promptly and often and was willing to step in as a last minute sitter for our dogs. We appreciated the updates while we were away and trusted that our pups were in good hands!

My dog Geoff had a great time with Rich! Daily walks and trips to the dog park were great. Rich did an awesome job of sending daily updates and pictures. Rich's availability and genuine love of dogs made for a great experience for myself and Geoff. Would highly recommend!

Warning: If you send your dog to hang with Rich and his dogs, your dog may never want to leave. While Rich is a human being, and a responsible one at that, he has a dog's sensibility at all times. And I mean that in the best way; some people are born dog people, and Rich is one of them. His dogs are pampered members of the family, and yours would be the gleefully-welcomed cousin. My dogs have enjoyed Rich's hospitality and have returned happy and fulfilled courtesy of his TLC. Highly recommended!

The best testament to my soaringly high opinion of Rich as a dog lover, dog caretaker, and doggie daddy is that in 2007 I handed over two of the best fosters I ever had to him and allowed him to take them out of my state (CO) to his home in OR. In the ensuing years I have visited Rich, Willy and Gracie numerous times and witnessed what a sound decision that was. I only wish Rich was here in Denver to care for my dogs when I travel, as I would leave town without a care in the world, knowing that they were in the best of hands.

Information Rich J. would like to know about your pet

I have no breed preference except that I probably prefer mutts. I'm probably not the guy you want for any kind of high maintenance dog, but I'm totally the guy you want if you describe your dog as a boxer/cowboy mix and think it's important that he is able to watch HGTV during his stay.

A typical day

My place is on a quiet street--not so much "quiet" as "unpaved" and "full of ruts" and "a dead end"--in "scenic" North Portland. There's not a lot of traffic on it, and the traffic there is will go slower than your dogs (or risk needing a new suspension, thanks to the ruts). It's close to designated off-leash parks like Chimney Park and East/West Delta Park. Also there's Netflix and Hulu and Amazon Prime and HBO Go.
