About Forrest Gump Greyhound

Adopted through the rescue group Greyhound Pets of America - Louisville chapter, this retired racer is a goofy boy who loves to be loved. We refer to Forrest as our frat boy because he loves to lounge on the sofa all day, and he will scarf down pizza and guzzle beer if they are within his reach. (Well, taste beer. He will sneak a lick off an open beer bottle every chance he gets.) He has a notoriously touchy digestive system that requires frequent adjustment of his diet. Forrest's track running days left him with arthritis in all four feet, and cauda equina (neurological condition) leaves him s bit wobbly in the back end. He had two toes surgically amputated due to severe dislocations, one on each back foot. Don't be fooled, though; he can still gallop at 35mph when he feels up to it. Forrest also needs plenty of reassurance to calm his anxious personality. He gets lots of hugs from us. Loves kids and people in general. Gets along with most dogs but has had a couple decide they didn't like him for some reason. We avoid cats and small dogs as a precaution since Forrest has snatched birds out of midair twice to play with them.

Forrest has kidney dysfunction, so during the day he is unable to wait any longer than 6 hours between outdoor visits to piddle. This is not a behavioral issue - he is medically not able to hold his urine longer than 6 hours in the daytime. At night he can usually wait from a late-night potty run at 11 pm until 7-8 am before he politely demands to go out. NOW. Sometimes he can't, and he will let us know it.
  • Gets along with children: Yes
Forrest ADORES children, especially small ones. He will let them pet him for hours, and loves to be snuggled.
  • Gets along with other dogs: Yes
He loves to run, but he has slowed down quite a bit since becoming a senior citizen. A submissive dog, Forrest needs to be looked after to make sure other dogs don't get too aggressive with him. He's a lover, not a fighter.
  • Gets along with cats: No
A retired racing dog, Forrest was trained at the racetrack to chase small furry critters. He was a very successful racer, and he is so fast that he has snatched flying birds out of mid-air in our backyard a couple of times. (He just wanted to play with them, he is not an aggressive hunter.) I would not be comfortable with him staying in a home where there are cats, small dogs, puppies, or other little free-roaming critters (ferrets, bunnies - especially bunnies! - and the like).

Special Requirements

Forrest alternates between home-cooked diet and Science Diet D/D, thanks to Irritable Bowel Disease. I will provide pre-cooked or prescription dog food meals for him. Also, by virtue of his being a former racing dog, Forrest can be emotionally needy at times. He simply needs reassurance that everything is okay. Stroking his fur, hugs, and quietly talking to him are how we let him know all is well.
