Veterinary Assistant Also Sitter

Pet care experience

We made it through COVID! It's 2023 and people are out and about again and CA has just dropped the mask mandate for health care workers. I am vaccinated and I am still ok with doing first meet and greets out in the open or I am ok with doing in home meet and greets with masks, whatever you feel most comfortable with. COVID-19 addition: I am very COVID cautious! During the meet and greet I ask that we meet outside with masks on and safely distance. At that point we discuss how to further proceed with booking. Thank you be safe. ❤️ Update: fully vaccinated I first started my venture in pet sitting when I was about 12 years old or younger and my neighbor was heavily involved in BUNS (bunnies urgently needing shelter) and if her and her husband would go out of town it was my pleasure to get to take care of her many rabbits, cats, dogs and at the time she may have had a few birds. I currently still do sitting for them and she still has birds and rabbits. :) I grew up an animal lover and volunteered for BUNS and eventually worked in the field as a kennel technician and moved my way up to veterinary assistant and went to school to pursue and Animal Science Degree. When managing a hospital in Northern CA when I was going to school I would go to a clients house three times a day to check on their cats and medicate, but I was never asked to stay at the house, as they had a live in nanny. When I moved back to town at a pet hospital I worked at and I am now currently working again, where we do boarding I was approached about pet sitting and staying at the clients house and administering sub-q fluids for an older very sick kitty, the owners just felt more comfortable with the cat being at home rather than in a high stress hospital setting. After my one time pet sitting for the kitty at home I had a few more patients that were either "high anxiety" or their owners just felt better about them being at home and they asked me to stay at their house and they have become long term clients. I left the field for a short period of time due to an injury but always continued with pet sitting, as that is how I got my fill of furry friends, but I had always continued to do pet sitting and volunteering. It was actually thanks to my pet sitting that I started volunteering with amazing groups like Care4Paws. I am very grateful for my experiences in the veterinary field and meeting the amazing people I have met and for them sharing my name and it getting passed around I have a steady base of clients but I always have time for walks during the day or to go check in on someone. For more pics follow my Instagram account @nats_adventures_in_pet_sitting I like to discuss all pet needs at the meet and greet and I am almost always able to accommodate all pet needs rather walks, crates, playing in the backyard etc.

Natalie is kind, knowledgeable, experienced, and a true animal lover. Natalie took care of our Corgi and Cat—for 10 days. Our Corgi has challenges walking so it was hard for us to leave him with someone knowing they may not be able to handle the care and support he needed. Yet Natalie took better care of him than us!! He got homemade treats, grooming/ doggy spa, and all the love and care needed. And our Cat was absolutely in love with Natalie to the point she would meow for her pets and cuddles. Natalie is not just a pet sitter— she is a loving and kind human who relates to all. Her kindness radiates and our fur babies felt it.

Natalie was amazing with my pup. You can tell she genuinely cares and is very knowledgeable about dog health and training. Would not hesitate to have her watch my dog again.

Natalie was absolutely amazing! She is an excellent communicator and made the family feel so comfortable leaving Korra. Natalie updated us with pictures and was so flexible and helpful with our unexpected requests. She is outstanding with dogs, knowledgeable, and compassionate. I am so thankful we found Natalie!

Natalie was wonderful. Very responsible and caring. Unfortunately our 8 month old puppy had a bad case of separation anxiety during our 3 week trip to Europe. Natalie kept in touch with us with her concerns. We worked out a plan that worked for Natalie, us and our little guy. I would definitely recommend Natalie!

I feel like the best way to describe my "method" of pet sitting, dog walking, etc. is that I err on the side of caution. I treat all pets like they are my own and from working in the field I have seen so many accidents and unfortunately emergencies, that came from "fun" situations that I would always like to keep pup close to home and away from other pups that they don't know to avoid those situations where someone could get hurt. My own pup, used to have a nasty habit of chewing and he has consumed things he shouldn't have and he has a very delicate stomach so even dog food that other pups could eat can make him sick. So I tend to be overly clean and make sure there is no food scraps around and the trash is always taken out or in a safe place that is not reachable.

Information Natalie L. would like to know about your pet

I always like to do an initial meeting before agreeing to walk or do sitting. It is important that the pet, owner and I are all comfortable with the situation. Some pets have their quirks just like people, some dogs don't like to be close to other dogs when they are on leash, some cats get weird around certain foods. I am a fan of details when it comes it animals the more information the better.

A typical day

From working in the field and knowing how pets can be when mom and dad are away I think it is best to stay where they are comfortable and used to. So I think walks around the neighborhood are best. The beach and off leash parks are so much fun but they can be an accident waiting to happen. I have a large fenced in yard not close to traffic and if I have done several stays or walks with a pup and if all parties (owner, pet and I), are comfortable I have taken pups up to my house to run around up there. Sometimes for long stays its nice to have some off leash running but I prefer a controlled environment where I know everyone is going to be safe.

I currently work part-time as a veterinary assistant at a pet hospital in town, and we just started opening our doors to new clients, I would love to provide a referral for the amazing and very well educated veterinarians I work with. I am also doing schooling from home, provided by my work to finish my CVA/RVT so that allows me plenty of time to spend with my furry friends.
