I use a long, retractable lease for walking and train the dog as we walk to either go out on the leash or walk beside me for safety. I've never taken care of other peoples dogs, just my own, but I have American Staffordshires that are the kindest, most loving, healthy, and well-behaved dogs you would ever want to meet so I think that is a pretty good recommendation. I live on an in-town farm with 3 acres but have a large enclosed back yard where the dogs play during the day. My animals are friendly once introduced, and if there's anyone who doesn't get along, I have portable fences for time-outs, and kennels for super time-outs. The streets arounds my home are quiet, and there are dirt roads along the irrigation canals for walking the dogs. We do not allow the dogs in the pasture because we have cows there and we do not want to put either the cows or the dogs at risk but the dogs can see the cows and interact through the fence.
