Dogs are family. My pup is a 4 year old Maltese-Terrier mix. We adopted her from a rescue group when she was one. I noticed one day she had trouble finding the ball on her left side, and took her to an eye specialist. The doctor said she had a detached retina and luckily I noticed it early. Because of the early detection and quick action, we were able to operate and save her sight. I pay a lot of attention to details and dog behaviors to make sure they are comfortable and happy. I double-check harnesses are secure and not too loose before going on a walk, I make sure there is always fresh water in the bowl, and always measure out the correct amount of food. I even rinse my dog's paws under the sink after every walk so they're clean in case she wants to lick them (which she does, a lot!) I pay just as much care and attention to every dog that I take care of. When I enter a house, I make sure to block the door at all times to eliminate any risk of a dog darting outside. I'll get to know your dog a bit before taking them out on a walk so your dog is feeling comfortable. I usually require a meet and greet for each new dog that I dog-sit or walk. I do this so that you can meet me in person and have confidence that you'll be leaving a precious family member in safe and competent hands. I do this also for any timid dogs so they're more comfortable once they've met me in your presence. Before I walk or care for your dog I'll ask you about their temperament or any behavior quirks I should know about. I suggest meeting with me and your dog when you are at your home at least once to make sure everyone is comfortable with the arrangement. I'll take time to learn from you what your pup likes and dislikes. I'll learn about your dog's normal eating and potty schedule and follow it so as not to interrupt their routine. If your dog is barking then I'll relax and sit on the floor, let her sniff my hand, use a calm soothing voice to talk to her until she can calm down and let me get closer. If he hides behind furniture I'll try giving him a treat in case you approved of any. Or tossing around a favorite toy as another approach. I will never force your dog to do something they don't want or physically handle a dog that doesn't want to be handled. For their safety and mine.
