Poetry-in-Motion Mom, Lover of Dogs

Pet care experience

Hello! My name is McKenzie, and I am an animal lover, mama, wife, and fitness leader in South Bend. I have loved my own dog, who has now passed (old age and Cushing's Disease), and I now live with my husband, our daughter, and three amazing cats. We currently do not have a dog, because we were planning on having cats AND dogs... but when we adopted our first cat, Kovu, and then attempted to adopt a dog, we quickly realized that Kovu was not going to be happy in a home with a dog, but he was perfectly comfortable with more cats---and we needed to put his needs before our wants. So we grew our little family, just not quite in the direction we originally intended, and we love them to pieces. Our boys' names are Kovu, Louie, and Teddy, and you will find them in my pictures, along with pictures of my daughter, and other various journeys. Now, since we cannot have a dog of our own, and since I still miss my dog, Jack, very much from growing up---he was nearly 15 years old when he passed, and he was with me through some of the most prominent years of my life, and passed shortly after my husband and I were married---I look for ways to still be acquainted in the dog community, and to make dog lives better. It is *extremely* important to me that all animals know how loved they can be, and for those that already have a home, I want them to make more friends who love them, and for those who are seeking homes, I want to help them find them. Everyone deserves love. Since I was a small child, I have been involved with animals, because my mother organized and operated her own professional cattery that appeared at professional cat shows, so I know the ins and outs well of taking care of cats, medically and emotionally. But as I grew, I began to study how to take care of dogs, too, so that I could have a dog. Enter: Jack. Now, for the past seven years or so, maybe a little longer, I have been helping several neighbors, family members, family friends, and family neighbors, and their pets (dogs and cats), by assisting with home visits and house-sitting, giving walks, medicine administration (oral and injection), and catering to anywhere from the young to the elderly and special needs. I believe that every dog, every animal, should be well-loved and well-catered to, no matter their need or condition. Visiting with animals is always a highlight of my day, getting to see their sweet face and smile, spending time with them, being out in nature---it changes my day's perspective, because I feel in a way like I'm looking out on it and interacting with it through them, and it challenges me to get outside and walk and find new things to do to entertain them, and I love that about being with animals. Being with them truly brings out my best self.

I really just want to express how much this woman loves animals and how prepared she is, each and every visit, to cater to your animals. She's provided my home with food, treats, blankets, toys, new leashes, and even clean water when our power was out, and all the love in the world. McKenzie takes care of my pets as if they were her own, and they love her like a second mom. She cuddles them, plays with them, feeds them, takes them on walks; she's done anything I needed her to do for me, present or not, and she's been the second pair of hands that I always needed, and all the more love that my dogs ever deserved.

McKenzie has been my friend for years and has always helped me with my two dogs (Sam and Duke) since they were pups. She's been there for me, just when I needed an extra pair of hands, bringing over groceries or buying more dog food for me when I under-estimated when I needed to buy more (and throwing in some bones for the guys, of course), or taking them on an impromptu walk when I was overworked or sick or suddenly had to go in for an unplanned shift. She also knows her way around the kitchen, in making meals with human ingredients that are great for dogs during the winter months and rainy days, and she does not shy away from taking care of an aging dog or a sick dog. Whenever my guys have been sick, she's helped me, giving them pills, and in one case an injection when I was too squeamish; and she always cuddled and massaged and took special care around my mother's dog whenever they were in the house at the same time. But most importantly, McKenzie just has so much love for animals. You can see it the minute she spots one, the excitement she has to even say hello to the animal, let alone her joy in finding a way to make that animal's day even a little bit better---and her goal to show every animal she meets that there's at least one more person in the world who loves them. She's a special kind of friend and animal lover, and you'd be very lucky to have her in your and your dog's lives.

Information McKenzie T. would like to know about your pet

I don't have any breed preferences, but I would love to meet with them once before I walk them, just to make sure that we make a good team and so I can cuddle them a little before walking them. I also need to know any health needs they have, and what commands they know, and in which language.

A typical day

Depending of where the dog's family is located, I would love to take them to a park, such as Battell Park or Riverwalk, and I'd love to take them into a store to get them a chew bone as a treat, depending on their dietary and dental needs. At the park, I will walk them, jog with them depending on their wants / needs, and play fetch and frisbee with them, depending on their interests. I'm also open to suggestions, depending on the family's practices!
